Piney Point is a small community in St. Mary's County, Maryland, United States. It's often called "The Point." This area is known for its pretty beaches and a special school called the Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education, where people learn how to work on ships. You can also find a historic lighthouse and a museum here. The Piney Point post office also serves St. George Island, which is connected by a short bridge.

A Look at Piney Point's Past
Piney Point has always been a beautiful place. It got its name from the many yellow and loblolly pine trees that grow along the shores of the Potomac River. For a long time, it was a popular summer spot for important people from Washington D.C..
Famous Visitors to Piney Point
Several United States Presidents enjoyed visiting Piney Point. These included James Monroe, Franklin Pierce, and Teddy Roosevelt. Other important leaders like Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and Daniel Webster also often stayed at the Piney Point Hotel. Sadly, this hotel closed down after a big hurricane in 1933.
In the early 1940s, Piney Point was home to a U.S. Navy base. This base was a special place where the Navy tested torpedoes, which are underwater weapons. Today, this land is where the Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training is located.
The small homes you see across from the maritime school were originally built for Navy members and their families. The two-story houses along Stark Drive were for Navy officers. The base also had its own hospital, a bowling alley, a place for vehicles, and a dock for ships. Many Navy members who were not married lived on large ships anchored in St. George Creek.
