Pink's Hot Dogs facts for kids
Pink's Hot Dogs is a well-known hot dog restaurant. It is located in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles, California. You can find it on North La Brea Avenue, right across from the Hollywood area.
History of Pink's
Pink's Hot Dogs started in 1939. It was founded by Paul and Betty Pink. They began with a small pushcart near La Brea and Melrose Avenues. This was during the Great Depression, when money was hard to find.
People could buy a chili dog for just 10 cents. Betty Pink made her own special chili recipe. The hot dogs were served with mustard and onions on a steamed bun. As more people loved Betty's chili and their special Hoffy-brand hot dogs, Pink's grew bigger.
In 1946, the Pink family built the restaurant you see today. It is located at 709 North La Brea Avenue. This spot is still in the Fairfax District, across from Hollywood.
Pink's Today
Pink's has many new menu items. Some of these are named after famous Hollywood celebrities. You might even see some celebrities at the restaurant! Inside, the walls are covered with signed photos from many stars.
Some celebrity hot dogs are actually what those stars like to order. For example, the "Martha Stewart Dog" has mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, sauerkraut, bacon, and sour cream. The "Rosie O'Donnell Long Island Dog" is a 10-inch hot dog with mustard, onions, chili, and sauerkraut. The "Ozzy Spicy Dog," named for Ozzy Osbourne, has a Polish sausage, nacho cheese, American cheese, grilled onions, guacamole, and chopped tomatoes.
Pink's also offers a few hamburgers. For dessert, you can choose between coconut or marble cake.
There is almost always a long line of customers outside Pink's. Even though parking is hard to find, people love to wait. Many people think waiting in line is part of the fun. This is especially true on Friday and Saturday nights. That's when the restaurant gets very busy with people coming from clubs and concerts.
The original chili dog, which is 10 inches long, is still the most popular item.
In 2017, when the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team was in the World Series, Pink's changed its name to "Blue's." They even painted the building blue and white! This was part of a friendly bet with a restaurant in Houston. Houston won that year. The Dodgers made it to the World Series again in 2018 and 2020. Pink's changed its name to Blue's each time. The Dodgers finally won the championship in 2020!
In March 2020, Pink's, like many other restaurants, had to close its indoor dining. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The main Pink's location was closed for a few months. Now, customers can only get take-out food.
