History
The Huchiun tribe lived in the Pinole area a long time ago.
In 1823, Ygnacio Martínez received a large piece of land called Rancho El Pinole. He was a military leader in San Francisco. Martinez built a large house, called a hacienda, in Pinole Valley. This land is now Pinole Valley Park.
In the 1850s, a man named Bernardo Fernandez came from Portugal. He started a trading business near San Pablo Bay. He built the Fernandez Mansion, which is a historic building you can still see today. These early steps helped Pinole grow into a small but busy community.
Pinole grew even more when the Southern Pacific Railroad was built in 1878. A company called California Powder Works also started nearby in Hercules. During this time, Pinole's waterfront was very active. It became an important center for business and banking in the region. The first post office opened in 1878. Pinole officially became a city in 1903.
After World War II, Pinole and the areas around it grew very fast. A major highway, Interstate 80, was built in 1958. This led to many new homes being built. Pinole became a "bedroom community," meaning many people lived there but traveled to work in San Francisco or Oakland. Much of its old industries left, and the town became mostly residential.
Today, Pinole is known for its large shopping areas along Fitzgerald Drive. The Pinole Vista Shopping Center is also popular. The downtown area still has many buildings from the early 1900s. The city is working to keep this historic area special for visitors and the community.
Geography
Pinole covers about 13.6 square miles (30.46 square kilometers). About 5.3 square miles (13.22 square kilometers) is land. The rest, about 8.3 square miles (17.24 square kilometers), is water, mostly from San Pablo Bay.
The city of Pinole has special areas where endangered species live. One example is the Santa Cruz Tarweed, a very rare plant. It grows in the California coastal prairie ecosystem. This plant was found when a plan for a new shopping center was being made in the 1980s. The city then made a plan to plant more of this tarweed along Interstate 80. Pinole Creek also flows through the city.
