Pleasant Adams Hackleman was an important figure in American history. He was a lawyer and politician from Indiana who became a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Sadly, he was killed in battle while fighting for his country.

Early Life and Career

Pleasant Adams Hackleman was born in Franklin County, Indiana, in 1814. In 1833, he married Sarah Bradburn and started his life as a farmer. He later studied law and became a lawyer.

From 1837 to 1841, Hackleman served as a probate judge in Rush County, Indiana. A probate judge handles legal matters like wills and estates. In 1840, he became the editor of a newspaper called the Rushville Republican.

In 1841, he was elected to the Indiana State Legislature. This meant he helped make laws for his home state. He also attended the National Republican Convention in Chicago. At this meeting, Abraham Lincoln was chosen as the Republican candidate for president.

Military Service in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Hackleman joined the Union Army. Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton appointed him as a colonel. A colonel is a high-ranking officer in the army. Hackleman led the 16th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

His regiment was first sent to the Eastern Theater of the war. This was the main area of fighting in the eastern United States. They fought in the Battle of Ball's Bluff.

In April 1862, Hackleman was promoted to brigadier general. This is a very important rank, just below a major general. He was then ordered to join General Ulysses S. Grant in the Western Theater. This was the main area of fighting in the western United States.

General Hackleman was put in charge of the 1st Brigade in the 2nd Division of the Army of the Tennessee. His division was temporarily working with General William S. Rosecrans's Army of the Mississippi. This army was stationed near Corinth, Mississippi.

Death in Battle

On October 3, 1862, the Confederate Army attacked General Rosecrans's forces near Corinth. Early in the battle, the Confederates broke through the Union lines. General Hackleman bravely tried to gather his soldiers and lead them. During this intense fighting, he was shot in the neck.

He was taken to a nearby hotel in Corinth, where he was dying from his wound. His last words were, "I am dying, but I die for my country." His body was returned to his home in Rushville, Indiana, where he was buried. Pleasant Adams Hackleman was the only general from Indiana to be killed in battle during the Civil War.

Legacy

A small community in Indiana is named after him. It is called Hackleman, Indiana.
