Pocket Dragon Adventures is a fun animated TV show from 1998. It was made in Spain and the United States. The show is based on cute characters called Pocket Dragons, created by artist Real Musgrave. You might know them from the popular Pocket Dragons figurines!

The cartoon is all about a group of tiny dragons who live with a kind old wizard. They go on many exciting adventures together. The series was created by Craig Miller and Marv Wolfman, who also wrote many of the episodes. It was one of the first animated shows to sign a special agreement with the Writers Guild of America. The show first aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s in the US and about 50 other countries.

Where Do the Pocket Dragons Live?

The show takes place in a world that looks like the Medieval times. You'll see things like armored knights and castles. But there are also some really strange and funny things mixed in! For example, you might see yellow taxicabs pulled by rhinoceroses. Sometimes, even science fiction elements appear, like flying saucers!

Meet the Pocket Dragons and Friends

The show has many interesting characters, especially the six main Pocket Dragons and their friends.

The Pocket Dragons

  • Filbert: He wears a red bandanna around his neck. Filbert is the biggest and oldest of the Pocket Dragons. He tries to be the leader, but the others don't always listen! He is voiced by Ian James Corlett.
  • Zoom-Zoom: This dragon wears an old-style aviator's helmet. Zoom-Zoom really wishes he could fly, even though Pocket Dragons can't. He's the fastest runner in the group. Jason Gray-Stanford is his voice actor.
  • Specs: He wears human-sized eyeglasses on his nose. Specs is the bookworm of the group and loves reading. He has a secret crush on the Princess. Sam Vincent voices Specs.
  • Scribbles: One of the two girl dragons, Scribbles is a bit forgetful but a clever inventor. Her inventions often cause more problems than they solve! She carries a pencil in a special quiver. Scribbles sometimes takes charge when Filbert can't. Her voice is done by Kathleen Barr.
  • Binky: The other girl dragon, Binky is the smallest and youngest. Even though she's childlike, she can surprise everyone with how smart and capable she is. She's the only dragon who doesn't wear anything special. Tabitha St. Germain voices Binky.
  • Cuddles: He wears bedroom slippers and always carries a pillow. Cuddles is usually sleepy or already asleep. Sometimes when he sleeps, he "sleep-plays" that he's a brave adventurer named Sir Cuddles! He wakes up if someone says "Cushladoo." Venus Terzo voiced him in Season 1, and Terry Klassen in Season 2.

Other Important Characters

  • The Wizard: He owns the castle where the dragons live. The Wizard is a kind, friendly old man who looks after the dragons and tries to keep them out of trouble. He's a great magician and has a huge library and laboratory in his castle. He is voiced by Christopher Gaze.
  • Library Cat: This is a special winged cat who is the Wizard's helper. Library Cat also wears glasses and is a good friend to the Pocket Dragons.
  • Sparkles: A full-sized dragon who isn't very smart. He can float by blowing himself up like a balloon! Robert O. Smith voices Sparkles.
  • Princess Betty Bye Belle: She runs the town library. She loves books and seems to know that Specs likes her, but she sees him more as a friend. Saffron Henderson is her voice actor.
  • Shmahz: A short wizard who doesn't like the dragons. He often tries to get revenge on them for messing up his evil plans.
  • Sir Nigel: A full-sized dragon who is a friend of the Wizard and the Pocket Dragons. He is very cultured and smart.
  • Trafalgar: A mean full-sized dragon who learns how to be evil from a guidebook.
  • The Pie-Rats: A group of three rodent thieves named Cuda, Wuda, and Shuda. They are experts at stealing yummy pastries!
  • Gnorman the Gnome: A clumsy character who is sometimes a villain and sometimes helpful. The "G" in his name is pronounced (G-norman the G-nome). He has a brother named Gnasty and a sister named Gnoxious.

How the Show Works

Each half-hour episode of Pocket Dragon Adventures actually contains two shorter, 11-minute cartoons. The stories are mostly for fun and imagination, but they also teach some small lessons. Usually, the Pocket Dragons get into some kind of trouble, either because of their own actions or someone else's. Then, they go through wild and crazy situations trying to fix things!

Some episode titles are funny parodies of famous movies or TV shows. For example, there's an episode called "Binky, Warrior Princess" and another called "Attack of the 50 Foot Binky".

In total, 104 eleven-minute cartoons were made. These were shown as 52 half-hour episodes in the US. In some countries, like the UK, they were even aired as 15-minute programs!

Who Are the Voices Behind the Dragons?

Here are some of the talented actors who brought the characters to life:

  • Ian James Corlett as Filbert
  • Jason Gray-Stanford as Zoom-Zoom
  • Samuel Vincent as Specs
  • Kathleen Barr as Scribbles
  • Tabitha St. Germain as Binky
