Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are exciting role-playing video games. They were created by Game Freak and released by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. These games came out for the Nintendo Switch on November 18, 2022.

They are the very first games in the ninth generation of the popular Pokémon video game series. Unlike older Pokémon games, Scarlet and Violet let you explore a huge open world. The games are set in the Paldea region, which looks a lot like the Iberian Peninsula (where Spain and Portugal are).

In these games, you can choose from three different main stories to complete. Scarlet and Violet also bring 110 brand-new Pokémon to discover. Plus, there are special "Paradox Pokémon" and a cool new power-up called the Terastal phenomenon. This power lets your Pokémon change its type and look like crystal!

Scarlet and Violet were very popular when they launched. They sold over 10 million copies in just three days. This made them Nintendo's biggest game launch ever! By March 2023, they had sold 22 million copies.

Gameplay in Paldea

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet keep the main ideas from past Pokémon games. You collect creatures called Pokémon by catching them or trading with friends. Then, you use your Pokémon to explore the world and battle other trainers. A new feature lets you choose whether to battle trainers you meet on your journey.

These games feature a truly open world. This means cities and wild areas blend together without any loading screens. You can also decide how you want to play the game. There are three main story paths you can follow, and you can do the tasks in each path in any order you like.

New Pokémon and Features

The games introduce 110 new Pokémon. This includes three new starter Pokémon:

  • Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon
  • Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon
  • Quaxly, the Duckling Pokémon

You'll also meet two new legendary Pokémon: Koraidon and Miraidon. These powerful Pokémon can help you travel quickly across the land. They can run, swim, glide, and climb!

Two new regional forms of existing Pokémon are also introduced. Plus, there are "convergent evolution" Pokémon. These look similar to other Pokémon but are actually completely different species, like Wiglett, which looks a bit like Diglett.

A new "Let's Go" feature lets you send out a Pokémon to explore on its own. It will automatically battle wild Pokémon it finds. You can also play with up to three other friends in co-op mode.

Terastal Phenomenon

Scarlet and Violet introduce a special power-up called the Terastal phenomenon. When a Pokémon Terastallizes, it gets a cool, crystalline look. It also changes its type to match its "Tera Type." This can be a big surprise in battles!

Terastallizing also unlocks special moves like Tera Blast. When a Terastallized Pokémon uses Tera Blast, the move's type matches the Pokémon’s Tera Type.

Paldea's Story

Setting the Scene

The Paldea region, where the games take place. It looks like the Iberian Peninsula.
The Iberian Peninsula includes Spain and Portugal. It inspired the Paldea region.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are set in the Paldea region. This area in the Pokémon world is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula. Paldea has many different landscapes. You'll find lakes, dry lands, and tall mountains.

In the middle of Paldea is a huge hole called the Great Crater of Paldea. It was made by a meteorite long ago. Inside this crater is an area called Area Zero. This is where the Terastalization power was first discovered.

The region is split into 20 different areas. Each area has different Pokémon. Some Pokémon can only be found in certain parts of Paldea.

Your Grand Adventure

In Scarlet and Violet, you attend either the Naranja (Orange) or Uva (Grape) Academy. The academy has a yearly "Treasure Hunt." Students are encouraged to explore the region and find something they truly value.

Early on, you meet a legendary Pokémon, either Koraidon or Miraidon. This Pokémon joins you and helps you travel, even though it can't battle at first. You are then encouraged to take part in three main stories:

  • Victory Road
  • Starfall Street
  • Path of Legends

Victory Road

In Victory Road, your friend Nemona asks you to complete all eight of Paldea's Pokémon Gyms. Nemona is a Champion-ranked trainer and often battles you. After you defeat all the Gym Leaders, you can become a Champion yourself. You do this by beating the region's Elite Four and the Top Champion, Geeta. Once you are a Champion, Nemona challenges you to a final, exciting battle.

Starfall Street

Starfall Street begins when you help a shy student named Penny. She is having trouble with List of Pokémon characters#Team Star, a group that caused bullying at the academy. Penny is secretly Cassiopeia, the founder of Team Star. She asks you to help with "Operation Starfall." The goal is to make Team Star break up by defeating its five squad bosses.

You get help from the academy director, Clavell. He pretends to be a student named Clive to learn about Team Star. Penny also guides you as Cassiopeia. You learn that Team Star was actually formed to stop bullying, not cause it. Eighteen months earlier, they stood up to bullies, which caused some students to leave and staff to resign. After you defeat all the squad bosses, Penny reveals her identity and battles you. Clavell then offers peace to Team Star, but they must do community service for their actions.

Path of Legends

Arven wants to find five special ingredients called Herba Mystica. He asks you to join him on the Path of Legends. To get each Herba Mystica, you and Arven must work together. You will defeat powerful "Titan Pokémon." These are very large Pokémon that are powered up by the Herba Mystica.

Later, Arven tells you he wants to use the Herba Mystica to help his pet, Mabosstiff. Mabosstiff was hurt by a Pokémon in Area Zero. This is where Arven's parent, either Professor Sada (in Scarlet) or Turo (in Violet), used to work. After you defeat all five Titans, you use the Herba Mystica to heal Mabosstiff. This also helps Koraidon or Miraidon get its lost powers back. Arven then challenges you to a final battle. After this, he is called to Area Zero by the professor. He decides you need more help before going there.

The Final Journey

You choose Nemona and Penny to help you. Then, Arven and you head to the Zero Lab. This is the professor's lab in Area Zero. Inside, you find Paradox Pokémon. These are creatures from either the ancient past or the far future.

When you reach the lab, you discover the professor is not there. Instead, an AI (a computer program that thinks like a person) is in charge. The AI explains that the real professor is no longer there. The original professor built a time machine to bring Paradox Pokémon to the present. The AI's job is to keep the time machine running.

The AI asks you to shut down the time machine to protect Paldea's nature. But its programming makes it battle you. After you defeat it once, the time machine's safety systems force your Koraidon or Miraidon to battle the AI's own Pokémon. This causes the time machine to break down. The AI then travels to the past or future. It apologizes to Arven for the original professor not spending enough time with him.

Back at the academy, Nemona, Clavell, and Geeta organize a Pokémon battling tournament. You compete against teachers and students. After showing off all you've learned, you win the tournament!
