The Poplar Rapids River is a river located in Ontario, Canada. It flows through parts of the Cochrane District, including the area of Fauquier-Strickland. This river is part of the larger James Bay drainage basin, which means its waters eventually flow into James Bay. The Poplar Rapids River is a "tributary" of the Mattagami River, meaning it flows into the Mattagami River.
Where the River Flows
The Poplar Rapids River starts in a forest area called Ford Township. This area is in the Unorganized North Cochrane District. From there, the river flows north.
It passes into and out of the municipality of Fauquier-Strickland two times. Along its journey, it is joined by Sydere Creek, which flows into it from the left side.
The river then reaches the southern part of Departure Lake. It flows through the lake and continues its journey north from the lake's northern end.
Further along, the river is joined by Haggart Creek from the right side. It then flows under Ontario Highway 11 and the Ontario Northland Railway near the community of Departure Lake.
The Poplar Rapids River also flows through Ouellet Lake. Finally, it reaches its end, or "mouth," where it flows into the Mattagami River in Hurdman Township. The Mattagami River then carries these waters to the Moose River, which eventually empties into James Bay.
