Potter Mountain is a cool ridgeline, or long mountain range, in western Massachusetts. It's part of the Taconic Mountains. This mountain has a few important peaks. The most famous one is Jiminy Peak, which is about 2,392 feet (729 m) tall. A popular ski area is named after it and sits on its slopes. The highest point on the ridge is Widow White's Peak, standing at about 2,430 feet (740 m).
Exploring Potter Mountain
Potter Mountain is located in the towns of Hancock and Lanesborough. It used to have a hiking path called the Taconic Skyline Trail, but that trail doesn't officially cross the mountain anymore.
Amazing Views
Even without that trail, Potter Mountain offers some amazing views! You can find clear spots, especially where the ski area meets the mountain on its southwest side. From these spots, you can see far and wide.
Neighboring Mountains
Sometimes, people get Potter Mountain mixed up with Poppy Mountain, which is to the south. The Taconic mountain range continues north from Potter Mountain as Brodie Mountain. To the south, it continues as Poppy Mountain. To the west, across the Wyomanock Creek valley, you'll find Rounds Mountain.
Water Flow
The water from the west side of Potter Mountain flows into Kinderhook Creek. From there, it travels to the Hudson River and eventually reaches Long Island Sound. Water from the east side of the mountain flows into Secum Brook, then into Pontoosuc Lake, and finally into the Housatonic River before also reaching Long Island Sound.
