The town of Denison is about 8 miles east of Pottsboro. You can reach it by taking Farm to Market Road 120. Sherman, which is the main city of the county, is about 12 miles to the southeast. The United States Census Bureau says Pottsboro covers a total area of about 3.3 square miles (8.54 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
History of Pottsboro
Before Pottsboro was officially a town, two important people owned large ranches there. They were Judge James G. Thompson and Mr. James Archer Potts.
Founding the Town
Pottsboro was started in 1876 by James A. Potts. He was an early settler who gave land for the town. He also provided land for a railroad track. This allowed the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad to extend its line from Denison to his settlement. Because it was a railroad stop, the community grew quickly in the late 1800s.
Early Growth and Challenges
The town officially became a city in 1880. It was first called "Pottsborough." By 1885, about 200 people lived there. The town had a cotton gin, which separates cotton fibers from seeds. It also had several gristmills, which grind grain. Many churches were also built.
Pottsboro faced tough times with several big fires. These fires destroyed much of the business area. They happened in 1890, 1902, 1923, and 1924.
Name Change and Later Years
In 1891, Judge James G. Thompson, who was James A. Potts's father-in-law, asked for a post office. When the government approved it, they dropped the "ugh" from "Pottsborough." This is how the town became known as "Pottsboro." The post office opened that same year.
The population grew to 454 people by 1920. It reached 500 by 1925. At that time, Pottsboro had about 25 businesses, including a bank. It also had two schools with 300 students combined.
However, the population then dropped to 358 by 1936. By the mid-1940s, it was down to 312. The number of businesses also fell to 12 by 1948.
Modern Growth
Pottsboro started growing again in the 1950s. This might have been because Denison, a nearby city, was also growing fast. By 1957, Pottsboro's population was 383. By the late 1950s, it had more than 20 businesses again.
In 1967, Pottsboro reported 30 businesses and a population of 750. By 1990, 1,177 people lived there. The population continued to increase, reaching 1,579 in 2000.
