Praveen Kumar (born 2 October 1986) is a former Indian cricketer. He was known for his right-arm medium-pace bowling. This means he bowled at a medium speed. He was very good at making the cricket ball swing. This means the ball would curve in the air. He played for the Uttar Pradesh cricket team in first-class cricket. In October 2018, Praveen Kumar announced he was retiring from all types of cricket.

About Praveen Kumar

Praveen Kumar was born in Laprana village in the Shamli district on October 2, 1986. His father, Sakat Singh Khaiwal, was a police officer. His mother's name is Murti Devi Khaiwal. In 2010, he married Sapna Choudhary. She is a national-level shooting player.

Praveen Kumar owns a farmhouse in Barnava village. He also has a restaurant and a place for weddings in Meerut. He later joined politics by becoming a member of the Samajwadi Party. This was before the UP assembly elections.

Early Cricket Days

Praveen Kumar first became well-known for his cricket skills in 2004-05. He took the most wickets (meaning he got the most batters out) in the 2004–05 Vijay Hazare Trophy. This was a big 50-over cricket tournament in India. He also played very well for India Red in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in 2007.

Playing for India in ODIs

Praveen Kumar made his debut in One Day International (ODI) cricket for the India national cricket team. This happened against the Pakistan national cricket team in November 2007. The match was played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

He was chosen to play in the Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia in 2008. This was a special tournament with three teams: India, Australia, and Sri Lanka. Praveen Kumar played a key role in India winning the series. People noticed how well he could swing the ball. He had exciting battles against famous Australian player Ricky Ponting.

From 2008 to 2010, he became India's main opening bowler in ODIs. He was picked for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. However, he got an injury and was replaced by Sreesanth.

Playing for India in Test Matches

Praveen Kumar made his Test debut against the West Indies cricket team in Kingston in June 2011. In his first Test match during India's tour of England in 2011, he took five wickets. This is called a five-wicket haul and is a big achievement for a bowler.

IPL Career Highlights

Praveen Kumar played for several teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He started with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) until 2010.

While playing for RCB, he achieved a hat-trick. This means he took three wickets in three balls in a row. He was the sixth bowler in IPL history to do this. It happened against the Rajasthan Royals at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore in 2010.

In 2008, also for RCB, he hit one of the longest sixes in IPL history. The shot was measured at 124 meters. This equaled the record set by Chennai Super Kings player Albie Morkel in the same season. The shot was off the bowling of Yusuf Pathan.

He then played for Kings XI Punjab from 2011 to 2013. In the 2014 IPL auction, no team bought him at first. This was because his starting price was too high.

Later in 2014, the Mumbai Indians signed him. He joined them as a replacement for Zaheer Khan, who was injured. Praveen Kumar then played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2015. They bought him for 220 lakh Indian rupees.

His last IPL team was the Gujarat Lions. He played for them from 2016 to 2017.
