Yusuf Khan Pathan (born 17 November 1982) is a famous Indian former cricketer and now a politician. He is part of the Trinamool Congress political party. Yusuf Pathan started his professional cricket journey in 2001. He was known for being a strong right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. His younger brother, Irfan Pathan, is also a well-known Indian cricketer.
Yusuf Pathan stopped playing all forms of cricket in February 2021. He was a key player in the Indian team that won two big tournaments: the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Since June 2024, Yusuf Pathan has been a Member of Parliament for the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal.

About Yusuf Pathan's Life
Yusuf Pathan was born in Baroda, Gujarat, India. He comes from a Gujarati Pathan family. He is the older brother of fellow Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Yusuf and Irfan helped people by giving out face masks. Yusuf is married to Afreen, a physiotherapist from Mumbai. They have a son together.
Yusuf Pathan's Cricket Journey
Yusuf Pathan's cricket career began with strong performances in domestic games. These good games helped him get picked for the first-ever ICC World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa in September 2007.
International Cricket Debut
Yusuf made his Twenty20 International debut in the final match of the 2007 World Twenty20 against Pakistan. He opened the batting for India and scored 15 runs. India won this exciting tournament!
His good play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) led to him joining the Indian one-day team. He played his first One Day International (ODI) match for India against Pakistan in Dhaka on 10 June 2008. He became a regular player in the ODI team.
Key Performances and World Cups
In November 2008, Yusuf scored a quick fifty runs off just 29 balls against England in Indore. This happened on his 26th birthday!
Even though his performance in the second IPL season wasn't as strong, he was still chosen for the Indian team for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England. He scored 33 runs not out from 17 balls against England in one match.
In December 2010, Yusuf showed his amazing power-hitting skills. He scored an unbeaten 123 runs from 96 balls against New Zealand. He helped India chase a huge target of 316 runs to win the game. This was his first century in one-day cricket. The Indian captain, Gautam Gambhir, praised Yusuf, saying he could win games by himself.
Before the 2011 World Cup, Yusuf scored another brilliant 105 runs off 70 balls against South Africa in Pretoria. This century was the second-fastest by an Indian player outside of Asia. Because of his strong performances, he was selected for the Indian team for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Even though he didn't have his best World Cup, he was part of the winning team and got to lift the World Cup trophy!
Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Yusuf Pathan has been a very important player in the Indian Premier League.
Early IPL Success
After a great domestic season in 2007-08, the Rajasthan Royals team signed him for the IPL. In the 2008 IPL season, he scored 435 runs and took 8 wickets. He hit the fastest half-century of that season, scoring 50 runs in just 21 balls. He was also named the Man of the Match in the final, where Rajasthan Royals won the title.
Record-Breaking IPL Innings
On 13 March 2010, Yusuf Pathan scored a century (100 runs) in just 37 balls while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Mumbai Indians. This was one of the fastest centuries in IPL history! His captain, Shane Warne, called it one of the best innings he had ever seen.
In the 2011 IPL auction, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought him. He continued to play for them for many years. On 24 May 2014, Yusuf hit the second-fastest 50 in IPL history, reaching it in only 15 balls. This helped the Kolkata Knight Riders finish high in the league and eventually win the title that season.
Later, in January 2018, the Sunrisers Hyderabad team bought him. He played some good innings for them, including a crucial 45 runs in the final.
Other Cricket Leagues
Yusuf Pathan also plays for the Bhilwara Kings team in the Legends League Cricket. This league features many famous retired cricketers.
Cricket Academy of Pathans
Yusuf Pathan and his brother Irfan Pathan together started the Cricket Academy of Pathans. This academy helps young cricketers learn and improve their skills. They even worked with former India coach Greg Chappell as a chief mentor for the academy's coaches.
Entering Politics
After his successful cricket career, Yusuf Pathan decided to enter politics. He ran in the 2024 Indian general election. He was a candidate for the Trinamool Congress party in the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency. Yusuf Pathan won the election, defeating the sitting Member of Parliament, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, by a large number of votes. He is now a Member of Parliament, representing his constituency in the Lok Sabha.
