Yusuf Pathan facts for kids
Yusuf Khan Pathan (born on November 17, 1982) is a famous Indian former cricketer and a politician. He is a member of the Trinamool Congress party. Yusuf played as a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler. His younger brother, Irfan Pathan, was also a well-known Indian cricketer.
Yusuf Pathan stopped playing all types of cricket in February 2021. He was a key player in the Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup. As of July 2025, Yusuf Pathan is a Member of Parliament for the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal.

About Yusuf Pathan's Life
Yusuf Pathan was born in Baroda, Gujarat, India. He comes from a Gujarati family. He is the older brother of fellow Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan.
Yusuf is married to Afreen, a physiotherapist from Mumbai. They have a son together. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Yusuf and Irfan helped people by giving out face masks. Yusuf also supported a group that helps young people.
Yusuf Pathan's Cricket Journey
Yusuf Pathan started playing first-class cricket in 2001. He became known for his strong hitting and useful bowling.
Starting in International Cricket
Yusuf's great performances in domestic games led him to join the Indian team. He played in the first-ever 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa. He made his Twenty20 International debut in the final match against Pakistan in September 2007. He scored 15 runs while opening the batting for India.
After showing his skills in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he was chosen for the Indian one-day team. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Pakistan in Dhaka on June 10, 2008. In November 2008, he scored a quick fifty runs in just 29 balls against England. This happened on his 26th birthday in Indore.
Record-Breaking Performance
In 2010, Yusuf Pathan played an amazing game in the final of the Duleep Trophy cricket tournament. He scored 108 runs in the first part of the match. Then, he made an unbeaten 210 runs from 190 balls in the second part. This helped his team, West Zone, win against South Zone. They chased down a huge target of 536 runs. This was a world record for the highest successful run chase in first-class cricket history.
Memorable ODI Innings
On December 7, 2010, Yusuf Pathan played a match-winning innings against the New Zealand team. He scored an unbeaten 123 runs from 96 balls. He hit seven fours and seven sixes. This helped India chase a big target of 316 runs. India won the game with seven balls to spare. Yusuf was named the man of the match for his effort.
Indian captain Gautam Gambhir praised Yusuf, saying he could win games by himself. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori also said Yusuf was "pretty amazing."
In 2011, before the World Cup, Yusuf scored 105 runs in 70 balls against South Africa in Pretoria. He hit 8 fours and 8 sixes. This was the second-fastest century by an Indian player outside the subcontinent. His strong performances helped him get selected for the 2011 World Cup team.
World Cup Success
Even though Yusuf did not have his best World Cup, he was part of the winning team. He earned a winner's medal and the honor of lifting the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
Later Career and Retirement
Yusuf was part of the Indian team for the 2012 Asia Cup in Bangladesh. He also played for Baroda's team in domestic matches. Yusuf Pathan officially retired from all forms of cricket in February 2021.

Yusuf Pathan had a very successful career in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Rajasthan Royals (2008-2010)
In the 2008 IPL season, Yusuf played for the Rajasthan Royals. He scored 435 runs and took 8 wickets. He hit the fastest half-century of the season in just 21 balls. He was also the Man of the Match in the final, helping Rajasthan Royals win the title.
In 2010, Yusuf scored a century in just 37 balls against Mumbai Indians. This was one of the fastest centuries in IPL history. His captain, Shane Warne, called it one of the best innings he had ever seen.
Kolkata Knight Riders (2011-2017)
In 2011, the Kolkata Knight Riders bought Yusuf for a large sum of money. He continued to play for them for many years. On May 24, 2014, Yusuf hit the second-fastest fifty in IPL history, reaching it in only 15 balls. This helped the Kolkata Knight Riders finish second in the league and win the IPL title that season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (2018-2019)
In 2018, Yusuf was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He played some good innings for them. He was released by the team before the 2020 IPL auction.
Cricket Academy of Pathans
Yusuf and his brother Irfan Pathan started the Cricket Academy of Pathans together. This academy helps young cricketers learn and improve their skills. They worked with former India coach Greg Chappell as a chief mentor for the academy.
Political Career
In 2024, Yusuf Pathan decided to enter politics. He ran in the 2024 Indian general election for the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency. He won the election as a candidate for the Trinamool Congress party. He defeated the previous Member of Parliament, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, by a large number of votes.
