This article is about the leaders of Mali since it became an independent country in 1960. A head of state is the top leader of a country. Mali gained its independence from France in 1960.
So far, seven different people have served as Mali's head of state. This number does not include three people who were acting presidents for a short time. Two leaders, Amadou Toumani Touré and Assimi Goïta, have held the position more than once.
The current interim president of Mali is Assimi Goïta. He took power for a second time on May 24, 2021. He became president after the previous interim president, Bah Ndaw, was removed from office. This happened during the 2021 coup. Since then, he has been officially named the interim president of Mali.
After a vote in 2023, Mali changed its government system. It moved from a semi-presidential system to a full presidential system. This means the president is now both the head of state and the head of government. The president also sets the government's main policies.

How Long Can a President Serve?
As of 2021, the Constitution of Mali says a president can serve for two terms. Each term lasts five years. No president has reached this two-term limit yet.
Who Takes Over if the President Can't Serve?
If the president is temporarily away, the Prime Minister takes over their duties. This is stated in Article 53 of Mali's Constitution.
If the president leaves office permanently, for example, due to resignation or death, the President of the National Assembly steps in. They serve as acting president for 90 to 120 days. During this time, a new president is elected.
