Early Life of Prince Antônio
Antônio was born in Paris, France, on August 9, 1881. He was the third and youngest son of Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil. His father was Prince Gaston, Count of Eu. Antônio's full name was very long, but his family called him "Totó."
His mother, Princess Isabel, was the oldest daughter of Pedro II of Brazil, who was the Emperor of Brazil. His father, Gaston, was a grandson of Louis Philippe I, a former king of France.
Life in Exile and Education
When Antônio was young, his grandfather, Emperor Pedro II, was removed from power in Brazil. This happened because of a military coup. Antônio and his family had to leave Brazil and live in Europe.
As a child, Antônio often got sick with bronchitis. He went to school in Paris. Later, he studied at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. After finishing his studies, he became a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian Army. He served there from 1908 to 1914.
Military Service in World War I
When World War I started, Antônio wanted to join the French army. However, a law stopped members of the old French royal family from serving in the military.
So, Antônio joined the Royal Canadian Dragoons instead. He was a lieutenant and worked with the Royal Flying Corps as an intelligence officer. This meant he helped gather important information.
Promotions and Awards
In 1916, Antônio was promoted to captain. The next year, in 1917, he received the Military Cross. This award is given for bravery during battle.
From February 1917 to May 1918, he was an aide-de-camp. This means he was a personal assistant to Brigadier-General Seely. After that, he worked for the War Office in July.

Tragic End
Prince Antônio died on November 29, 1918, shortly after World War I ended. He was injured in an airplane crash in Edmonton, London, England. His body was later buried in the Royal Chapel in Dreux, France.
