Quebec is a small village located in County Durham, in the North East of England. It used to be a coal mining village. Quebec is about 6 miles (10 km) west of the city of Durham. It is also close to other villages like Esh, Cornsay Colliery, Esh Winning, and Langley Park.
The village has a few important places. You can find a pub called the Hamsteels Inn, a hotel named Hamsteels Hall, and St John the Baptist Church. There is also a village hall, a playground for kids, and a place that sells used cars.
Why is it Called Quebec?
The village has a very interesting name, which comes from the famous city of Quebec in Canada. The land around the village was officially marked out in 1759. This was the same year that the city of Quebec in Canada was captured from France.
It was common back then to name fields far from the main farm after faraway places. Sometimes, these names even ended up being used for whole villages! You can find many examples of this in the North East of England. For instance, not too far away, there's a village called Toronto.
A Look at Quebec's Past
An old Roman road called Dere Street goes right through Quebec. This road was used by the Romans to travel from Yorkshire all the way to Hadrian's Wall. It passed by a Roman fort in Lanchester on its way.
Where is Quebec Located?
Quebec is about 6 miles (10 km) from Durham by road. The nearest large village is Esh Winning, which is about 2 miles (3 km) away. The village is around 650 feet (200 meters) above sea level. You can reach Quebec using smaller roads that connect to the B6301 and B6302 main roads.
Sports in Quebec
In 1902, there was a rugby team in Quebec called Hamsteels Rugby Club. They had a tough game against Hartlepool Rovers and lost by a lot! A newspaper writer even called Quebec an "outlandish place" after that match.
Today, the village mainly has football teams. Two of these teams, Hamsteels Inn FC and the Hammers FC, play at Quebec's Hamsteels Colliery Welfare Ground. Another team, Steelers FC, is based nearby in Langley Park.
A famous football player named Chris Waddle once worked in Quebec. He was 20 years old and working at a meat factory called Hamsteels Frozen Foods. In 1980, he was signed by Newcastle United for £1,000. He had been playing for a local team called Tow Law Town.
