Ramiz Hasan Raja (Urdu: رمیز حسن راجہ; born 14 August 1962) is a famous Pakistani cricket player and commentator. He also served as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board from 2021 to 2022. Ramiz Raja was a key part of the Pakistani team that won the 1992 Cricket World Cup.

As a player, Raja represented the Pakistan national team in the 1980s and 1990s. He sometimes even led the team as captain. Today, he shares his thoughts on cricket on his YouTube channel called Ramiz Speaks.

Early Life and Family

Family Background

Ramiz Raja was born on August 14, 1962, in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. His family originally came from Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Cricket runs in his family! His father, Saleem Akhtar, played cricket during the time of British rule. After Pakistan was formed, his father played for teams like Multan and Sargodha. Ramiz's brother, Wasim Raja, and his cousin, Atif Rauf, both played for the Pakistan national cricket team. Another brother, Zaeem Raja, also played first-class cricket.

Education

Ramiz Raja went to several well-known schools. He studied at Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur, Aitchison College, Lahore, and Government College University, Lahore.

Cricket Career

Playing for Pakistan

Ramiz Raja started his professional cricket journey in 1978. He played his first Test match against England in 1984. His first One Day International (ODI) game was against New Zealand in 1985.

He played international cricket for 13 years. During this time, he played in 57 Test matches and scored two centuries (100 runs or more). In One Day Internationals, he played 198 matches and scored nine centuries.

World Cup Success

Ramiz Raja was part of the Pakistani team that reached the semi-finals of the 1987 Cricket World Cup. A big moment in his career was the 1992 Cricket World Cup held in Australia. He scored two centuries in this tournament. One of these was against the New Zealand team, who had not lost a single match until then. His amazing performance earned Pakistan a spot in the semi-finals.

In the final match against England, Ramiz Raja took the last catch. This catch helped Pakistan win the Cricket World Cup! This was the highlight of his cricket career.

A Unique Dismissal

In 1987, during an ODI match against England in Karachi, Ramiz Raja was given out in a very unusual way. He became the first player in One Day International history to be out for "obstructing the field".

This happened when he was batting and had scored 98 runs. Pakistan needed 25 runs to win in the very last over. He hit the ball and ran for two runs, which would have given him his century. However, the fielder threw the ball towards him, and Ramiz Raja accidentally knocked the ball away with his bat. Because he stopped the ball from reaching the wicket-keeper, he was given out for "obstructing the field."

Later Career

Ramiz Raja was called back to the Pakistan team for the 1996 Cricket World Cup. After the 1995–1996 season, he was no longer the captain because Pakistan lost a home series to Sri Lanka. His last Test match for Pakistan was as captain during a tour of Sri Lanka in 1996–1997. The team did not win any matches in that series.

He stopped playing all forms of cricket in 1997. Since then, he has become a well-known commentator and analyst on television. He has also worked as an administrator for cricket in Pakistan and internationally.

After Retirement

Cricket Leadership

From September 2021 to December 2022, Ramiz Raja served as the 35th Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. This role meant he was in charge of how cricket was managed in Pakistan.

TV Host

In 2024, Ramiz Raja started a late-night entertainment show called Showtime With Ramiz Raja on Suno News. On this show, he interviews different celebrities.
