Rashad Dion McCants (born September 25, 1984) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a shooting guard. Rashad played college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He helped his team win a National championship during his junior year. After college, he played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and for teams in other countries.

High School Basketball Career

Rashad McCants started playing high school basketball at Clyde A. Erwin High School in Asheville, North Carolina. He then moved to the New Hampton School in New Hampton, New Hampshire. In 2002, he led New Hampton to win the New England Prep School Class A championship. He was also named the MVP of that championship game.

McCants was a very good student at New Hampton. He won the New Hampshire Player of the Year Award in both 2001 and 2002. In his senior year, he was chosen for the Parade All-American and McDonald's All-American Teams. He played in the McDonald's All-American Game with future college teammates Raymond Felton and Sean May.

College Basketball Career

In the 2002–2003 season, Rashad McCants joined the North Carolina Tar Heels college team. He played alongside other talented players like Sean May, Raymond Felton, and David Noel. Their coach was Matt Doherty.

In his first year, McCants was the top scorer for the Tar Heels. He scored 17.5 points per game. He was also voted to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) rookie team.

During the 2003–2004 season, McCants led the ACC in scoring with 20 points per game. His strong play helped UNC get back into the NCAA Tournament. He was named a First Team All-ACC player and a Second Team All-American.

For the 2004–2005 season, a new player, Marvin Williams, joined the team. With McCants, May, and Felton, the team was expected to do very well. They won 33 games and only lost 4. They also won the ACC regular season. McCants scored 16.4 points per game that season. UNC earned a top spot in the NCAA Tournament. They went all the way to the championship game. McCants helped the Tar Heels defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 75–70 to win the championship.

Rashad McCants scored 1,721 points during his time at North Carolina. He also made 221 three-pointers.

Professional Basketball Career

After winning the college championship, McCants decided to join the 2005 NBA draft. He was picked 14th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. His college teammates, Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, and Sean May, were also chosen in the same draft.

In his first two years in the NBA, McCants had some injuries. This made it hard for him to play as much as fans expected. However, in the 2007–08 season, he became a regular player for the Timberwolves. He even started many games. In January 2008, he scored a career-high 34 points against the Denver Nuggets. He also had a career-high 7 three-pointers in a game against the New York Knicks in December 2008.

In February 2009, McCants was traded to the Sacramento Kings. After that, he signed with the Houston Rockets but had to leave due to an injury. He later joined the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League.

McCants also played basketball in other countries. He played for teams in the Philippines, France, China, Brazil, Lebanon, and Venezuela.

BIG3 League

On April 30, 2017, Rashad McCants was the very first player picked in the 2017 BIG3 Draft. The BIG3 is a professional 3-on-3 basketball league. He was chosen by the team Trilogy.

On August 26, 2017, Trilogy won the first-ever Big3 League Championship. McCants scored 22 points in the final game. He was named the Championship MVP, which means he was the most valuable player in the championship game.

Personal Life

Rashad McCants has a sister named Rashanda McCants. She also played basketball for North Carolina and in the WNBA.

Rashad is also the cousin of Major League Baseball player Cameron Maybin. He is a third cousin of former Canadian Football League player John Avery.
