History of Real Murcia
Real Murcia officially began in 1919 as Levante Foot-ball Club. However, there were earlier football clubs in Murcia, like Foot Ball Club de Murcia from 1903. In 1923–24, King Alfonso XIII gave the club its "Royal" title, and it became Real Murcia.
A year later, the La Condomina stadium opened. Real Murcia played their home games there for 82 years!
Climbing the Leagues
In 1929, the club first played in the Tercera División (Third Division). They worked hard and reached La Liga (the top Spanish league) for the first time in 1939–40. Real Murcia's best finish in La Liga was 11th place, which they achieved four times: in 1945, 1946, 1984, and 1987.
The club is famous for winning the Segunda División title eight times. Their most recent win was in 2002–03 with manager David Vidal. That same season, they also had a great run in the Copa del Rey (King's Cup). They reached the quarter-finals but lost to Deportivo de La Coruña in a very close match.
Recent Times
After being promoted to La Liga in 2007, the team only stayed for one year. In June 2010, Real Murcia moved down to Segunda División B (the third tier) after a draw against Girona FC. But they quickly bounced back! They won the 2010–11 Segunda División B title and returned to the Second Division right away.
In 2014, Real Murcia finished fourth in the Segunda División. They were in a good position for promotion playoffs but lost to Córdoba CF. A few weeks later, the club faced some financial issues and had to move down a league.
In 2019, Real Murcia won the Spanish Royal Federation Cup for the first time. They won the final in a penalty shootout against CD Tudelano.
