History of Remigen

Remigen has a long and fascinating history. Even during the time of the Romans, an important road passed through this area. This road connected two Roman settlements, Augusta Raurica and Vindonissa.

The village of Remigen is first mentioned in old records from 1064. At that time, it was part of a larger land area called the "domain of Rein." A domain was like a big estate or territory ruled by a lord. This particular domain belonged to a Benedictine monastery in Alsace, a region now in France. Remigen itself is first named in documents in 1227 as Raemingen.

Habsburg Rule and Changes

In the 1200s, a powerful family called the Habsburgs started to control more land and legal rights around the town of Brugg. This area included Remigen and about nine other villages. The Habsburgs were the main judges and landowners here.

In 1291, King Rudolf I of Habsburg bought the domain of Rein, making him the most important person in the area. Later, in 1345, Queen Agnes of Hungary gave this domain as a gift to a convent of nuns called the Poor Clares. This convent was located in the Black Forest, a forested mountain range in Germany.

Bern's Influence and the Reformation

In 1460, the city of Bern took control of the land west of the Aare river. However, they didn't change the rights of the convent that owned Remigen. But things changed in 1528 when the Protestant Reformation began. The Catholic nuns had to accept the new Protestant religion in the area.

In 1544, the convent sold the domain to Count Hartmann of Hallwyl. Later, between 1588 and 1599, the town of Brugg bought two-thirds of the domain, and the city of Bern bought the rest.

French Conquest and Modern Times

In March 1798, the French army conquered Switzerland. They ended the old system where cities like Bern had great power. Instead, they created the Helvetic Republic. The domain of Rein, including Remigen, became part of the new Aargau canton.

In 1799, during the Napoleonic Wars, the fighting front was very close to Remigen. French soldiers camped in the area, and the local people suffered greatly because the army took their supplies and sometimes stole things.

In 1803, the old domain system was ended. Each village, including Remigen, became its own separate community. For a long time, Remigen was mainly a farming village. Its population stayed around 500 people until the 1970s. Since then, the population has doubled. Many new buildings were constructed, and Remigen became a "dormitory town." This means many people live there but travel to other towns for work.

Geography of Remigen

Remigen is located about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Brugg. It sits where two parts of the Jura meet, in the northwest corner of the Rüfenach plain. The village itself is on a steep southern slope, which is perfect for growing grapes for wine.

To the west of Remigen, there are two valleys. These valleys are separated by a hill called the Bützeberg, which is about 2,100 ft (640 m) high. One valley leads to the Bürersteig, a mountain pass that goes towards the Rhine valley. The other valley leads towards the Mönthal valley. The highest point in Remigen is the Burghalde, at about 2,100 ft (640 m). The lowest point is around 1,200 ft (370 m).
