Jules Gustave René Coty (born March 20, 1882 – died November 22, 1962) was an important French politician. He served as the President of France from 1954 to 1959. He was the second and last president of a period in French history known as the Fourth French Republic.

Who Was René Coty?

René Coty was a French lawyer and politician. He was born in Le Havre, France, and spent most of his life serving his country. He held many different political jobs before becoming president.

Early Life and Education

René Coty was born on March 20, 1882, in Le Havre, a city in France. He studied at the University of Caen Normandy. There, he earned a degree in law. After finishing his studies, he became a lawyer.

Political Career Before Presidency

Coty began his political journey in local government. He was elected to the General Council of Seine-Maritime in 1908. Later, he became a member of the French Parliament.

He served in the National Assembly and the Senate. These are like the House of Representatives and Senate in some other countries. He also held a position as the Minister of Reconstruction and Urban Development. This job involved helping to rebuild France after World War II.

Becoming President of France

In 1953, René Coty was elected President of France. He took office on January 16, 1954. His election was a long process, taking many rounds of voting. He was chosen to lead the country during a challenging time.

Presidency and the Fourth Republic

As president, Coty faced many difficult situations. The French Fourth Republic was a time of political instability in France. There were frequent changes in government leaders. He worked with several prime ministers during his term.

One of the biggest challenges was the Algerian War. This conflict caused a lot of tension in France. It eventually led to the end of the Fourth Republic.

End of Presidency and Legacy

The political problems in France became very serious. In 1958, René Coty asked Charles de Gaulle to form a new government. This led to the creation of the French Fifth Republic. Coty officially left office on January 8, 1959. Charles de Gaulle then became the first president of the new republic.

René Coty passed away on November 22, 1962, in his hometown of Le Havre. He is remembered as a president who guided France through a difficult period of its history.
