Rhinog Fach is a cool mountain located in Snowdonia, a beautiful national park in North Wales. It's part of a group of mountains called the Rhinogydd. Even though it's not the tallest mountain in its range, many people think it's the most impressive because of its amazing rocky top!

Rhinog Fach stands at 712 meters (about 2,336 feet) high. It's very close to being a "Marilyn," which is a special type of hill in Britain that is at least 600 meters tall and stands out by a certain amount. Rhinog Fach just misses this by 3 meters, making it a "sub Marilyn."

To the north of Rhinog Fach, you'll find its bigger neighbor, Rhinog Fawr. These two mountains are separated by a striking pass called Blwch Drws Ardudwy.

What Makes Rhinog Fach Special?

Even though Y Llethr is the highest mountain in the Rhinogydd range, Rhinog Fach is often called the "king" of the Rhinogydd. Why? Because its peak is super rocky and dramatic! In contrast, Y Llethr's top is mostly grassy and not as exciting to look at. This makes Rhinog Fach a favorite for hikers looking for a more adventurous climb.

Exploring the Rhinogydd Mountains

The Rhinogydd range is known for being wild and rugged. It's a great place for adventurers who love a challenge. The mountains here are often covered in tough heather and rocky areas, making paths a bit tricky to find sometimes.

What are Marilyns, Hewitts, and Nuttalls?

When you hear about mountains like Rhinog Fach, you might see terms like "Marilyn," "Hewitt," and "Nuttall." These are different ways that mountain climbers and enthusiasts categorize hills and mountains in the UK.

  • Marilyn: A Marilyn is a hill or mountain in Britain, Ireland, or the Isle of Man that is at least 600 meters (1,969 feet) high. It must also have a "prominence" of at least 150 meters (492 feet). Prominence means how much a mountain rises from the lowest point connecting it to a higher peak. Rhinog Fach is a "sub Marilyn" because it's tall enough but just misses the prominence rule.
  • Hewitt: This stands for "Hills of England, Wales and Ireland with a Top of 2,000 feet." A Hewitt is a mountain that is at least 2,000 feet (610 meters) high and has a prominence of at least 30 meters (98 feet). Rhinog Fach is a Hewitt!
  • Nuttall: A Nuttall is a mountain in England or Wales that is at least 2,000 feet (610 meters) high and has a prominence of at least 15 meters (49 feet). Rhinog Fach is also a Nuttall.

These categories help hikers keep track of the different peaks they've climbed and explore new areas.
