The ascent of Rhinog Fawr from Llyn Du

Rhinog Fawr is a mountain found in Snowdonia, which is a beautiful national park in North Wales. It is part of the Rhinogydd mountain range. This mountain is the third highest peak in the Rhinogydd. Only Y Llethr and Diffwys are taller. To the south, you'll find its smaller neighbor, Rhinog Fach. Another nearby mountain, Moel Ysgyfarnogod, is located to the north.

Exploring Rhinog Fawr

Rhinog Fawr is known for its tough landscape. The ground is made of hard sedimentary rock. This rock is covered with thick heather plants. This combination makes walking on the mountain quite challenging.

Llyn Du: The Black Lake

High up on the mountain, at 510 meters (about 1,673 feet) above sea level, you'll find a small lake called Llyn Du. This name means 'Black Lake' in Welsh. It's a type of lake called a tarn, which forms in a hollow created by a glacier. Llyn Du is nestled among rocky cliffs, making it a very scenic spot.

Climbing the Mountain

If you want to climb Rhinog Fawr, the easiest ways are from the north-east or north-west sides. One popular path is called the Roman Steps. Despite its name, these steps were likely built by local people in the Middle Ages. They were used to move goods and animals across the mountains. The steps are a cool historical feature to see on your climb.

What Makes Rhinog Fawr Special?

The Rhinogydd range, including Rhinog Fawr, is famous for its wild and rugged feel. It's not as busy as some other parts of Snowdonia. This means you can enjoy a quiet adventure. The views from the top are amazing, stretching across the Welsh countryside.
