Richard Conner (born December 23, 1843 – died November 4, 1923) was a brave soldier during the American Civil War. He fought for the Union Army. He received the Medal of Honor, which is a very special award for his amazing courage.

Richard Conner: A Young Soldier's Bravery

Richard Conner was only 17 years old when he joined the army. He was from Burlington, New Jersey. He officially became a Private in Company F of the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1861. He signed up to serve for three years.

During his first year, his group fought in several important battles. These included the 1862 Peninsular Campaign, like the Battle of Williamsburg and the Battle of Fair Oaks. They also fought in the Battle of Second Bull Run on August 29, 1862. It was during this battle that Richard Conner showed incredible bravery. This act of courage later earned him the Medal of Honor.

Rising Through the Ranks

Richard Conner was promoted to Corporal on September 10, 1862. He then became a Sergeant on February 4, 1863. He continued to serve with his regiment in many more battles.

In 1863, he fought in the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he was wounded. He also took part in the famous Battle of Gettysburg and the Mine Run Campaign.

Even with less than a year left of his first service, he chose to join the army again early. This happened on February 18, 1864. When the original soldiers of the 6th New Jersey finished their service in September 1864, new and re-enlisted soldiers joined the 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry.

Sergeant Conner was moved to Company E of the 8th New Jersey. He served with them until the Civil War ended in May 1865. He officially left the army on July 17, 1865.

Life After the War and Special Recognition

After the war, Richard Conner moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living there when he received his Medal of Honor. This special award was given to him on September 17, 1897. It recognized his brave act from 35 years earlier.

Richard Conner passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried in North Cedar Hill Cemetery. In 2000, a special marker was placed on his grave. This marker shows that he was a Medal of Honor recipient.
