Robert Kent (born October 6, 1980) is an American professional football quarterback. He played college football for the Jackson State Tigers. Robert has been a part of many different football teams throughout his career. These include the Tennessee Titans, Montreal Alouettes, Birmingham/Alabama Steeldogs, Lubbock Renegades, Toronto Argonauts, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Abilene Ruff Riders, Houston Stallions, Corpus Christi Fury, San Antonio Talons, St. Louis Attack, Texas Revolution, Dallas Marshals, Monterrey Steel, Massachusetts Pirates, Richmond Roughriders, Duke City Gladiators, North Texas Bulls, and San Antonio Gunslingers. He also worked as a head coach for the Duke City Gladiators for a short time in 2021.

Early Years in Football

Robert Kent started his football journey playing for the Gentry High School Rams in Indianola, Mississippi. When he was a senior, he was named All-State. This means he was one of the best players in the state. He threw for an amazing 2,883 yards and scored 30 touchdowns that year. Besides football, Robert also played track, basketball, and tennis.

College Football Career

Robert was the starting quarterback for the Jackson State Tigers at Jackson State University for four years. He played in 45 games, completing 825 of 1,539 passes. He gained 11,797 yards and scored 104 touchdowns. He averaged over 262 yards per game. His total passing yards were the fourth highest in NCAA Division I-AA history at the time. In 2002, Robert was a finalist for the Conerly Trophy, an award for the best college football player in Mississippi. He also played in the last ever Blue–Gray Football Classic in 2003, which was a special game for college football stars.

Professional Football Journey

After college, experts thought Robert Kent was one of the top quarterbacks in the 2004 NFL draft. Here are some of his stats before the draft:

Starting in the NFL

Robert signed with the Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL) in April 2004. He joined them after the 2004 NFL Draft, even though he wasn't picked in the draft itself. However, he was released by the Titans in August 2004.

Playing in Canada

In January 2005, Robert joined the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was with them for a few months before being released in June 2005. Later, in August 2007, he also signed with another CFL team, the Toronto Argonauts, but was released that same month.

Indoor Football Leagues

Robert spent a lot of his career playing in various indoor football leagues. These leagues are different from the NFL or CFL because they play indoors on a smaller field.

Birmingham/Alabama Steeldogs

From 2006 to 2007, Robert played for the Birmingham/Alabama Steeldogs in the af2 league. In 2007, he completed 44 passes for 462 yards and scored five touchdowns in just three games. He also ran for 65 yards and three touchdowns.

Lubbock Renegades

Robert played for the Lubbock Renegades twice. The first time was in April 2007. He threw for 3,535 yards and an impressive 81 touchdowns. He also ran for 11 touchdowns. He returned to the Renegades in 2008. That year, he helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time. He threw for 4,100 yards and 86 touchdowns. He was also the team's second-best rusher, with 189 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Other Indoor Teams

Robert continued his journey through various indoor football teams:

  • He played for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz in 2009.
  • In 2010, he signed with the Abilene Ruff Riders.
  • From 2011 to 2012, he played for the Houston Stallions, where he had a fantastic record of 19 wins and only 1 loss as a starter.
  • He joined the Corpus Christi Fury in 2013 and helped them reach the championship game in their first season. He led the league in passing yards and his team in rushing yards that year. He returned to the Fury in 2014.
  • In 2013, he also played one game for the San Antonio Talons.
  • He played for the St. Louis Attack in 2014. That team had an undefeated regular season but lost in their championship game.

Texas Revolution and Awards

Robert signed with the Texas Revolution in 2014 for the first season of the Champions Indoor Football (CIF) league in 2015. He had a great season in 2016, earning two big awards:

  • He was named the 2016 CIF Most Valuable Player (MVP).
  • He also won the 2016 CIF Offensive Player of the Year award.

He was released by the Revolution in March 2017 but later returned to play for them again in 2019.

Later Career Teams

After his first time with the Texas Revolution, Robert continued to play for several other teams:

  • The Dallas Marshals in 2017.
  • The Monterrey Steel in 2017.
  • The Massachusetts Pirates in 2018.
  • The Richmond Roughriders in 2018.
  • The Duke City Gladiators in 2019.
  • The North Texas Bulls in 2021 and again in 2023.
  • The San Antonio Gunslingers in 2022.

Life Outside Football

Away from the football field, Robert Kent had an interesting role in a movie! He was the stunt double for famous actor Dwayne Johnson (also known as "The Rock") in the movie The Game Plan. A stunt double is someone who performs dangerous or difficult scenes in place of the main actor.
