Robert Thomas Woods (born April 10, 1992) is an American professional football player. He is a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the Steelers, he played for the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans, and Houston Texans. He was a top college player, earning All-American honors in 2011 while playing for the USC Trojans.

Early Life and High School Sports

Robert Woods was born in Gardena, California, on April 10, 1992. He went to Killian Elementary and Alvarado Intermediate schools. For high school, he attended Junípero Serra High School in Gardena. There, he played both high school football and ran track & field.

During his junior year in 2008, Woods was amazing on offense. He caught 81 passes for 1,378 yards and scored 19 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 15 times for 124 yards. On defense, he made 87 tackles and caught seven interceptions.

In his senior year (2009), Woods continued to shine. He caught 66 passes for 1,112 yards and also ran for 70 yards. On defense, he had 96 tackles and eight interceptions. His team, the Serra Cavaliers, had a perfect 15–0 season. They won the CIF Northwestern Division Championship and then the CIF Division 3 state championship. USA Today ranked his team fifth in the West. After this great season, Woods was named a USA Today high school All-American. He also played in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Woods was also a very fast sprinter in track and field. In 2010, USA Today named him an All-USA high school track & field athlete. He ran the 200 meter dash in 21.04 seconds and the 400 meter dash in 46.17 seconds. His 400-meter time was one of the best for junior athletes worldwide that year. He graduated from high school in 2010. Experts considered him one of the best wide receiver prospects in the country. He chose to attend the University of Southern California.

College Football Career

Robert Woods played college football for the USC Trojans football from 2010 to 2012. He played under head coach Lane Kiffin.

2010 Season: Freshman Year

Woods made an immediate impact as a freshman. In his very first college game, he caught four passes. Later, he scored his first college touchdown on a 97-yard kickoff return. He had a fantastic game against Stanford, catching 12 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored two touchdowns against California.

By the end of his freshman year, Woods had 65 catches for 792 yards and six touchdowns. He was also excellent at returning kickoffs, leading his conference with 971 kickoff return yards.

2011 Season: All-American Honors

Woods had an even stronger sophomore season. He started with 17 catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns against Minnesota. He had another huge game against Arizona, catching 14 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored two touchdowns in games against Notre Dame, Colorado, Oregon, and UCLA.

In total, he finished his sophomore season with 111 catches for 1,292 yards and 15 touchdowns. He led his conference in catches and receiving touchdowns. Because of his amazing performance, Woods was named a Consensus All-American. This means he was recognized as one of the best college football players in the entire country.

2012 Season: Junior Year

Woods continued to be a key player in his junior season. He started with two touchdowns against Hawaii and two more against Syracuse. His best game was against Colorado, where he caught eight passes for 132 yards and scored four touchdowns.

After his junior season, Woods decided to enter the 2013 NFL draft to become a professional player.

Professional NFL Career

Before the 2013 NFL Draft, experts thought Woods would be one of the top wide receivers chosen.

Buffalo Bills (2013–2016)

The Buffalo Bills picked Robert Woods in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft. He was the 41st player chosen overall.

2013 Season: Rookie Year

Woods made his NFL debut as a starter for the Bills. In his very first game, he caught his first NFL touchdown pass. He finished his rookie year with 40 catches for 587 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games.

2014 Season: Second Year

In his second season, Woods became a key starter alongside rookie Sammy Watkins. He had a great game against the New York Jets, catching nine passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. He ended the season with a career-high 65 catches for 699 yards and five touchdowns.

2015 Season

The Bills got a new head coach, Rex Ryan, in 2015. Woods continued to be an important receiver. He had a season-high nine catches against the Jacksonville Jaguars and a season-high 106 receiving yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the season with 47 catches for 552 yards and three touchdowns.

2016 Season

Woods remained a starting wide receiver for the Bills in 2016. He had a strong game against the Seattle Seahawks, catching ten passes for 162 yards. He finished his fourth season with the Bills with 51 catches for 613 yards and one touchdown.

Los Angeles Rams (2017–2021)

On March 9, 2017, Robert Woods signed a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams. He quickly became a top receiver for the team.

2017 Season: First Year with Rams

Woods became a starting wide receiver for the Rams. He had a big game against the Houston Texans, catching eight passes for a season-high 171 yards and two touchdowns. In that game, he caught a 94-yard touchdown pass, which was one of the longest in Rams history. He finished his first season with the Rams with 56 catches for 781 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.

The Rams made the playoffs that year. In his first NFL playoff game, Woods caught nine passes for 142 yards, but the Rams lost to the Atlanta Falcons.

2018 Season: Super Bowl Appearance

Woods continued to be the Rams' top receiver. He had several games with over 100 receiving yards, including against the Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos. He reached 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career during this season.

Woods finished the 2018 season with 86 catches for 1,219 yards and six touchdowns. He helped the Rams reach Super Bowl LIII. In the Super Bowl, he had five catches for 70 yards, but the Rams lost to the New England Patriots. His fellow players ranked him among the top 100 players in the NFL for 2019.

2019 Season

Woods had another strong season in 2019. He caught 13 passes for 164 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had 13 catches for 172 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the season with 90 catches for 1,134 yards and two touchdowns.

Woods started the 2020 season with six catches for 105 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. He signed a new contract extension with the Rams in September 2020. In Week 11, he had 12 catches for 130 yards and a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, earning him the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

For the 2020 season, Woods had 90 catches for 936 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran the ball 24 times for 155 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Rams made the playoffs, and Woods scored a touchdown in their Wild Card Round win against the Seattle Seahawks.

2021 Season: Super Bowl Champion

Unfortunately, on November 12, 2021, Woods suffered a serious knee injury (a torn ACL) during practice. This injury ended his season early. Before his injury, he had 45 catches for 556 yards and five touchdowns in nine games. Even though he was injured, the Rams went on to win Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals, making Robert Woods a Super Bowl champion!

Tennessee Titans (2022)

On March 19, 2022, Woods was traded to the Tennessee Titans. He became the Titans' leading receiver that season, with 53 catches for 527 yards and two touchdowns. The Titans released him in February 2023.

Houston Texans (2023–2024)

On March 14, 2023, Woods signed a two-year contract with the Houston Texans. In the 2023 season, he played in 14 games and had 40 catches for 426 yards and one touchdown. In the 2024 season, he recorded 20 catches for 203 yards.

Pittsburgh Steelers (2025–present)

On April 28, 2025, Robert Woods signed a one-year contract to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Personal Life

Robert Woods' father, also named Robert Woods, played in the NFL for the Houston Oilers and Detroit Lions.

Robert Woods had a sister named Olivia who passed away from cancer in 2007. Her last words to him inspired him to work hard to achieve his dreams of playing in the NFL and finishing his college degree. He spoke about her during his graduation speech at USC.

On July 7, 2018, Robert Woods married his longtime partner, Alexandra Barbee.
