What's in a Name? The Story of Rondón

Juan Jose Rondón
Juan José Rondón, a hero who inspired the town's name

Before it was called Rondón, this town had a different name: San Rafael. Even earlier, the area was known as La Galera, which was a heavily forested place.

The town was renamed Rondón to honor a brave hero named Juan José Rondón. He was an important figure in Colombia's fight for independence. He was especially famous for his role in the Battle of Vargas Swamp.

A Look Back: The History of Rondón

For a long time, until the middle of the 1800s, the land where Rondón now stands was covered in thick forests. Over time, different families owned these lands.

New people began to settle here. They came from nearby towns like Ramiriquí, Ciénega, Viracachá, and Pesca. On June 30, 1904, Rondón officially became a municipality. This important step was taken by Ignacio Aristides Medina Ávila.
