What Does the Name Siachoque Mean?

The name Siachoque comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. They lived in the central highlands of what is now Colombia a long time ago.

The name is made of several words:

  • Si means "here".
  • A means "from, taste, smell".
  • Chó means "good".
  • Que means "vigorous fortress".

So, Siachoque can mean "place of good smells and strong and vigorous cultures". It can also mean "Land of the vigorous taste".

A Look Back: Siachoque's History

Siachoque was once part of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of Muisca communities in the Colombian Andes mountains. The local leader, called a cacique of Siachoque, was loyal to the main Muisca ruler, the zaque of Hunza.

When the Spanish arrived and conquered the Muisca, Siachoque became part of the New Kingdom of Granada. Modern Siachoque was officially founded on August 2, 1556. It was founded by a friar named Jerónimo de Peralta.

How Siachoque Makes a Living

The main ways people in Siachoque earn money are through agriculture and livestock farming.

  • Farming: Farmers grow many different crops. These include potatoes, a special type of yellow potato called Solanum phureja (papa criolla), maize (corn), oat, barley, and wheat.
  • Animal Farming: People also raise animals. They process meat and make dairy products like milk and cheese.
