Roy Thomas Frank Bentley (born May 17, 1924 – died April 20, 2018) was a famous English football player and manager.
He played as a forward. Bentley played 367 games for Chelsea. He was the captain when Chelsea won their first ever League Championship in the 1954–55 season. He also played 12 games for the England national team.

Bentley was born in Shirehampton, a town near Bristol, England. He went to Portway Boys Secondary School.
He married Violet M. Upton in 1946.
Roy Bentley's Football Career
Starting Out in Football
Roy Bentley served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he played for Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.
In 1946, he joined Newcastle United. He played there for less than two years. He was an important part of their forward team, playing alongside famous players like Jackie Milburn. In the 1946–47 season, his team reached the FA Cup semi-final. However, they lost to Charlton Athletic.
Playing for Chelsea
In January 1948, Bentley moved to the London club Chelsea. Chelsea paid £11,000 for him, which was a lot of money back then.
He became the captain of Chelsea. He led them to win their very first League title in the 1954–55 season. This was a huge moment for the club!
Bentley scored 150 goals in 367 games for Chelsea. When he passed away in 2018, he was the fifth highest goalscorer in Chelsea's history. Only Bobby Tambling, Frank Lampard, Kerry Dixon, and Didier Drogba had scored more goals for the club.
Playing for England
Roy Bentley played for the England team for six years. He even played in the 1950 FIFA World Cup.
Becoming a Manager
After he stopped playing football, Bentley became a manager. He managed Reading and later Swansea City.
He helped Swansea City get promoted to the old Third Division. In 1977, he went back to Reading, but this time he worked as the club secretary.
Later Life and Passing
Bentley lived in Chigwell, Essex in the late 1980s. Later, he moved to Reading, Berkshire.
When he died in April 2018, he was the last player still alive from England's squad at the 1950 FIFA World Cup.
