Batwoman and Beyond (2019–Present)
On August 7, 2018, it was announced that Ruby Rose would play Batwoman in an Arrowverse crossover event. Her role as Kate Kane was special because she was the first openly lesbian lead superhero on TV. Batwoman first aired on The CW on October 6, 2019.
Ruby Rose's casting as Batwoman received some criticism online. Some people said she was not Jewish, while others said she was not "gay enough" because she identifies as genderfluid. Being genderfluid means someone feels like a mix of genders or doesn't feel strictly male or female. Ruby Rose left Twitter and turned off comments on her Instagram account because of this. She asked for more kindness and support among women and the LGBT community.
In 2019, Ruby Rose talked more about the criticism. She said that when she was cast as a lesbian in Batwoman, she didn't know that being genderfluid meant she couldn't be a lesbian. She later considered how to explain her identity without offending people.
On May 19, 2020, Ruby Rose left Batwoman after the first season. She later explained that she had suffered an injury during filming. She also said that being the main star of a TV series was very demanding. Her back surgery after the injury was a reason for her decision to leave. In March 2021, she said she would be happy to play Kate Kane again, but thought it was more important to focus on the new Batwoman character. Later, another actress, Wallis Day, was cast as Kate Kane. Ruby Rose said she was "stoked" about this casting. In July 2021, Ruby Rose also mentioned she was allergic to latex, which was another reason for leaving. Her character's mask was made of latex.
In November 2021, Ruby Rose took a break from Hollywood. She returned to her home country, Australia.
Music and Charity Work
In February 2012, Ruby Rose released her first song, "Guilty Pleasure," with Gary Go. In November 2016, she directed the music video for The Veronicas' song "On Your Side." She supports many charities. She has also traveled to Laos and Africa to volunteer.
Ruby Rose cares about animal welfare and campaigns against bullying. She also supports youth mental health and is an ambassador for Headspace.
Ruby Rose's Personal Life
Ruby Rose openly shared she was a lesbian at age 12.
She has said that she felt like a boy growing up. She even saved money to have surgery to make her body more masculine. However, she later said she is glad she didn't have the surgery because she wants to have children one day. She found that modeling helped her explore androgyny. This means having both masculine and feminine traits. She said she feels "very genderfluid" and often feels "gender neutral." She prefers to use feminine pronouns (she/her) but also uses they/them pronouns.
Ruby Rose is a vegan. She also supports the Geelong Cats football team in Australia.
Ruby Rose has had relationships with The Veronicas singer Jessica Origliasso and fashion designer Phoebe Dahl.
In 2019, Ruby Rose had emergency spinal surgery. This was to fix two herniated discs caused by doing her own stunts on the set of Batwoman. Doctors said she could have been paralyzed without the surgery.
Ruby Rose in the Media
Many news outlets have talked about Ruby Rose's gender identity, how she expresses her gender, and her appearance. This includes her tattoos and how she looks similar to other famous people. In 2008 and 2009, she was named one of the "25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians." After she appeared on Orange Is the New Black, public interest in her grew even more. In 2015, she was the fifth-most-searched person on Google.
