Ruchill is a neighbourhood in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It's located in the north of Glasgow, nestled between the Maryhill and Possilpark areas. In the past, Ruchill faced some challenges, but since the late 1990s, many older homes have been replaced with new ones. This has helped to make the area much nicer.
One part of the area, called High Ruchill, is a bit different. It always had semi-detached houses instead of the older apartment buildings. This part of Ruchill also didn't have the same challenges as other parts of the neighbourhood.

What Was Ruchill Hospital?
This area used to be home to Ruchill Hospital. It was a special hospital that treated people with infectious diseases. The hospital closed its doors in 1998.
Exploring Ruchill Park
Ruchill Park opened in 1892 and is a big, important green space in the area. Even though the soil wasn't great and it was quite windy, Parks Superintendent James Whitton helped transform it into a beautiful park.
The best part of the park is the amazing view you can get from the top of the hill. You can see all of Glasgow and the areas around it! This hill was actually built using 24,000 cartloads of soil from when Ruchill Hospital was being built nearby. Locals call it "Ben Whitton" after the park's superintendent. During World War II, an anti-aircraft gun was placed in the park to help defend the area during the Clydebank Blitz, a series of bombings.
Ruchill Golf Course: A Green Space for Golfers
Ruchill Golf Course was a popular spot for golfers in Glasgow for many years. However, in 2000, the city council decided to close it.
There's a former railway tunnel that runs under the golf course. Locals call it the "miley" because it's about a mile long! It used to be part of the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway, connecting Maryhill Central railway station to Possil railway station. There was also another tunnel that linked Ruchill to the Lambhill area. This tunnel went under the Forth & Clyde Canal, which also ran through the golf course. This second tunnel is known as the Halloween Pen. It wasn't a railway tunnel, but a tunnel used to guide sheep through when the area was more rural.
On September 17, 2009, the Ruchill Golf Course reopened! Famous golfer Colin Montgomerie helped with the reopening. The course, now called the "Ruchill Community Golf Facility," is run by Culture and Sport Glasgow, which is part of Glasgow City Council. It's a nine-hole course designed with Colin Montgomerie's help, perfect for both new and experienced players.
Other Interesting Places in Ruchill
You can find the Ruchill Church Hall to the west of the area, near Maryhill Road and the Forth and Clyde Canal. This hall was designed by the famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Right next to it is Ruchill Parish Church, designed by Neil Campbell Duff.
A new footbridge was built over the canal in 2022. This bridge connects Ruchill with Gilshochill and makes it easier to get to Maryhill.
