Gilshochill (pronounced GIL-shee-hil) is a cool place in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It's located to the northwest of an area called Maryhill. Imagine looking down on Glasgow from a high spot – that's Gilshochill! It sits on a hill, about 150 meters (nearly 500 feet) above sea level.
This area is special because it's where two parts of the Forth and Clyde Canal meet. This meeting point is called Stockingfield Junction. The canal is like an old water highway that connects different parts of Scotland. Gilshochill is spread out around Sandbank Street, and it borders other areas like Cadder and Summerston. If you're sending mail there, the postcode starts with G20. You can also get there by train, as it has its own stop: Gilshochill railway station.
In 2022, a new footbridge was built at Stockingfield Junction. This bridge makes it much easier for people in Gilshochill to walk to Ruchill and get to Maryhill.
Homes and History
Gilshochill has a mix of different types of homes. You'll find many semi-detached houses here. These are homes that are joined to another house on one side, but they have their own gardens. Many of these are privately owned and offer great views of Glasgow.
Some buildings in Gilshochill are very old. You can see homes from the Victorian era, which was a long time ago when Queen Victoria ruled. There are even some buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries! One of the oldest churches in the Maryhill area, built in the late 1600s, is also found here.
Besides houses, there are also some tall tower blocks. These are big apartment buildings, like the 20-story ones on Glenavon Road. You might also see tenements, which are large apartment buildings that were common in Scottish cities a long time ago. The area also has many homes owned by the local council. Some of these older council homes might be taken down in the future to make way for new developments.
