Summerston's Past
The current Summerston railway station is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of the original one. The first station was on the Kelvin Valley Railway. It was located near Summerston Farm and Cottages. This spot was also close to a small Roman fort.
Roman Fort and Wall
The Roman fortlet was found in 1980 by looking at the ground from the air. A temporary Roman camp was also found nearby in 1978. This camp was south of the River Kelvin.
A special stone slab was found at Summerston Farm before 1694. This slab was made by the Second Legion of the Roman army. It shows a horseman wearing a helmet and some captured people. The slab is now in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow.
Scientists used X-ray and laser technology to study the slab. They found that it was once painted with bright colors. The Roman forts closest to this fortlet were at Bearsden to the west and Balmuildy to the east.
Another Roman slab found in Summerston is similar to one from Castlehill. Both of these slabs have two decorative shields. These shields are called pelta shields. The Summerston slab has griffins' heads on its shields.
A different, very old slab was found in 1803. It was found on a farm near Summerston. This slab recorded that the Sixth Legion built 3666.5 paces of the wall.
There is some proof that a Roman bridge crossed the Kelvin River. This bridge would have been between Summerston and Balmuildy. In the past, people mined ironstone and coal in the Summerston area.
