Fashion show facts for kids

A fashion show is an exciting event where fashion designers show off their newest clothing and accessories. These shows happen during special times called fashion weeks. Designers use them to promote their new styles for upcoming seasons, like spring/summer or fall/winter.
The four biggest fashion weeks in the world are in New York City, London, Milan, and Paris. These are often called the "Big 4." Berlin also hosts an important fashion week.
During a typical fashion show, models walk down a special walkway called a catwalk. They wear the clothes the designer created. Bright lights and cool special effects make the clothes stand out. The order of the outfits is carefully planned to show what the designer wants to say with their collection. The audience then tries to understand the designer's message and appreciate the details of each piece.
Sometimes, fashion shows are set up like art installations. In these shows, models stand or sit still in a special environment. Some designers even create big theatrical shows with amazing sets, live music, or technology like holograms.

History of Fashion Shows
Early Fashion Shows
The exact start of fashion shows isn't fully known. But in the 1800s, "fashion parades" happened in fancy fashion houses in Paris. These were formal events where designers showed their latest clothes to important customers.
A designer named Charles Frederick Worth became famous for showing clothes on real people instead of just mannequins. This idea came to the U.S. in the early 1900s. The first American fashion show probably happened in 1903 in New York City. By 1910, big department stores like Wanamaker's also held fashion shows. They wanted to show off their good taste and attract female shoppers.
By 1918, fashion houses started having fixed dates for their shows, twice a year. This helped them plan and promote their collections to buyers from other countries. These early shows often took place in department stores or hotels.
Fashion Shows Grow
By the 1920s, stores all over the U.S. were holding fashion shows. These shows were often like plays, with stories and themes. They were very popular, sometimes bringing in thousands of people.
In the 1970s and 1980s, American designers began holding their own shows in private places. But in the early 1990s, there were some problems with shows in small, unsafe spots. So, the New York shows were moved to Bryant Park in 1993 during Fashion Week. This made them safer and more organized.
Fashion Shows Today
Today, designers use technology to make fashion shows even more modern. They might use digital videos as backgrounds or project images onto water screens. For example, Ralph Lauren showed his new line in Central Park using a water-screen projection in 2014.
Technology also lets more people see the shows. In 2010, London Fashion Week was the first to let people watch shows live online. Now, live streaming of fashion shows is very common.
Fashion shows are usually filmed and shown on TV or in documentaries. Many top designers create very fancy shows with huge sets, which can be expensive. Fashion shows introduce new styles and influence what you see in regular stores. They are also a great way for designers to get publicity.
How Fashion Shows Are Set Up
A fashion show's runway can be simple, like a narrow path between chairs. Or it can be very detailed with many catwalks. Most shows are held indoors to protect from the weather. But sometimes, they happen outside. For example, at Paris Fashion Week in 2016, Chanel turned the show hall into an airport! Guests sat as if waiting for flights, and models walked around like travelers.
Fashion Models
When fashion shows became popular, the job of a runway model quickly grew. At first, fashion houses had their own models who would wear the clothes. This made sure the clothes fit perfectly for the show. But as more models were needed, modeling agencies were created to represent them.
The Catwalk

The word catwalk refers to the special walkway or stage where models show off clothing and accessories during a fashion show. Designers use catwalks to introduce new fashion lines and new designers. In fashion talk, "what's on the catwalk" means what's new and popular in fashion. In the United States, people often call the catwalk a runway.
