Russell Joseph Howard (born 23 March 1980) is a well-known English comedian, TV host, radio presenter, and actor. He is famous for hosting his own TV shows, like Russell Howard's Good News and The Russell Howard Hour. You might also know him from the funny panel show Mock the Week. Russell won an award for "Best Compère" in 2006. He was also nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award for his show that year. He has said that comedians Lee Evans, Richard Pryor, and Frank Skinner have inspired his work.

Russell Howard's Early Life and School

Russell Howard was born in Bath, England. His parents are Dave and Ninette Howard. He has two younger twin siblings, Kerry and Daniel, who were born in 1982. Russell sometimes talks about his brother Daniel's epilepsy in his comedy shows.

Russell went to several schools, including Bedford Modern School, Perins School, and Alton College. Later, he studied economics at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Russell Howard's Career in TV and Radio

Russell Howard has had a busy career in television and radio. He started working in radio in 2004. BBC Radio 1 asked him to write and perform for a comedy series called The Milk Run. He also appeared on other radio shows like Banter and Political Animal for BBC Radio 4.

Popular TV Shows

From 2006 to 2010, Russell was a regular guest on Mock the Week. This was a popular TV show where comedians talked about the news. He also appeared on many other well-known shows. These include 8 Out of 10 Cats, Would I Lie to You?, and Live at the Apollo.

Russell often worked with other comedians. They were part of a group called the Chocolate Milk Gang. This group included comedians like Daniel Kitson and John Oliver. Russell and John Oliver both love the football team Liverpool F.C..

Hosting His Own Shows

In 2009, Russell got his own comedy show called Russell Howard's Good News on BBC Three. This show was made for younger audiences. It quickly became the highest-rated entertainment series on BBC Three. In the show, Russell shared his funny thoughts on the week's news. He also highlighted some of the more light-hearted stories. The show ran for ten series and was very popular. In 2013, Russell Howard's Good News was even voted the "Best Ever BBC Three show".

Russell also hosted Russell Howard's Stand Up Central on Comedy Central from 2015 to 2016. In 2017, he started a new weekly comedy series called The Russell Howard Hour on Sky One. This show was part of a two-year deal with Sky.

Acting and Travel Shows

In 2015, Russell tried acting for the first time. He starred in a comedy-drama for BBC Two called A Gert Lush Christmas. He also helped write the show. In the film, he played Dan Colman, who takes his girlfriend to meet his family. His sister Kerry also acted in the film, playing Dan's sister Julie.

Starting in 2016, Russell presented a travel show for Comedy Central. It was called Russell Howard & Mum: USA Road Trip. In this show, he traveled across America with his mother, Ninette.

Russell Howard's Live Comedy Shows

Russell Howard is also very famous for his live stand-up comedy tours. He has performed all over the world.

His 2007 tour, Adventures, was released on DVD as "Russell Howard Live". In 2008, he started his Dingledodies tour. This tour was so popular that he extended it twice. It sold over 125,000 tickets, including sold-out shows at big venues like the Hammersmith Apollo and Wembley Arena. The DVD of this tour came out in 2009.

In 2009, Russell was named "Best Theatre Show" at the Chortle Comedy Awards. His 2011 arena tour, Right Here Right Now, also sold out completely.

In 2013, Russell announced his Wonderbox stand-up tour. This tour started in 2014 and included shows in Britain, Ireland, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. The tour was released on DVD in November 2014.

In 2015, he announced his fifth stand-up tour, Round The World. This tour took place from 2017 and included Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and America. Before the tour, Russell even planned to memorize the capital city of every country in the world!

From 2019 to 2023, Russell was scheduled to do his sixth stand-up tour, Respite. This tour included shows in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Canada, America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Russell Howard's Life Outside Work

Russell Howard lives in London with his wife, Cerys, their son, and their dog, Archie, who is a Jack Russell Terrier. He got married in June 2019.

Russell is very serious about football and has supported Liverpool since he was ten years old. He enjoys playing football with his friends.

In April 2010, Russell ran the London Marathon. He ran with his brother and sister to raise money for the Epilepsy Society. He finished the 26-mile race in 4 hours and 15 minutes, beating his goal time. They raised over £7,000 for charity.

For Sport Relief in 2010, he took part in the BT Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride. He cycled from John o' Groats in Scotland to Land's End in England in four days. He did this with other famous people like David Walliams and Jimmy Carr. They aimed to raise £1 million.

In 2011, Russell broke his left hand while filming a segment for Good News. He was trying to do press-ups on a stunt chair.

In 2013, Russell was voted Heat Magazine's "Weird Crush of the Year". His friend and former flatmate, Jon Richardson, came in second place.
