Name and Early History
Russell Township is the only township with this name in the entire state of Ohio. Sometimes, people also call the area Novelty. This name comes from the post office located in the small, unincorporated community of Novelty, which is part of the township.
The first five people to settle here were Gideon Russell and his family. They arrived in 1818 and made their home on what is now called Chillicothe Road. In 1827, the township was officially named Russell. Before that, people in nearby areas knew it as the "West Woods."
In April 1827, the community held an election. They chose John Lowry, Clark Robinson, and Gideon Russell as their first township trustees. Clark Robinson was an important early settler. He built the first framed building in the area and opened the first store.

Most of the township's non-incorporated areas are served by the West Geauga school district. However, the village of South Russell and a small part of the township are covered by the Chagrin Falls school district.
