Ryan Alexander Bloom is a talented American drummer, author, and teacher. He is well-known for playing drums in the Colorado-based thrash metal band Havok and the death metal band Bloodstrike. Ryan has also written several helpful books about drumming, including Double Bass Drumming Explained and Thrash Metal Drumming.

Ryan's Early Life and School
Ryan grew up in a military family. His dad, Eric, was a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. Ryan went to Crested Butte Community School in Crested Butte, Colorado for high school. He was very active in sports, playing soccer and doing Track and field.
In 2002, Ryan was recognized as an All-State Honorable Mention in soccer. He also finished 6th in the state championship for pole vault. After high school, Ryan went to the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned a degree in music there.
Ryan's Music Journey
Ryan joined the band Havok in 2007. Soon after, the band signed a record deal with a famous metal label called Candlelight Records. Ryan played drums and helped write lyrics for Havok's first album, Burn, which came out in 2009. He also appeared in their music video for "Morbid Symmetry." Ryan toured with Havok for about two years before leaving the band.
In 2010, Ryan briefly played with Micah Ortega from Five Iron Frenzy. They formed a death metal band called Mordheim. They recorded a short demo before the band stopped playing together. In 2011, Ryan recorded percussion for Amara Grace's album. In 2012, he played drums for a grunge/punk band called Amish Warfare.
In 2013, Ryan started teaching drums at Denver Music Tree. This music school was run by Mackenzie Gault from the band Flobots. In 2014, Ryan joined the swedish death metal band Bloodstrike. He recorded a demo with them called Necrobirth. Bloodstrike has experienced musicians, including former members of other bands. Also in 2014, Ryan began teaching at the School of Rock in Aurora, Colorado.
In 2015, Bloodstrike announced they signed with Redefining Darkness Records. They released their full-length album, In Death We Rot, on September 25. In 2017, Ryan recorded a second album with Bloodstrike called Execution of Violence. Bloodstrike then toured with the band Forceps. Also in 2017, Ryan started playing drums for Immortal Sÿnn. He filled in for their regular drummer for about a year.
Since 2019, Ryan Bloom has been part of the marching band staff. He works at Los Alamos High School in New Mexico.
Ryan's Books and Writing
Ryan is also an author who writes instructional books about drumming. He has published books on many topics. These include how to play double bass drums, drum rudiments, and thrash metal drumming. He also writes about reading music. Ryan has even updated old drum manuals from the 1800s. He has also translated military drum manuals into English.
His first book, Double Bass Drumming Explained, came out in 2012. It teaches about double bass drum techniques. In 2013, he published Double Bass Drumming Explained Part 2: The Workbook. This book has many exercises for drummers to practice.
In 2016, Ryan combined and updated his first two books. This new book was called The Complete Double Bass Drumming Explained. In 2017, this book was picked up by Hudson Music. Hudson Music is a big publisher of music books.
In 2018, Ryan made another deal with Hudson Music. He published Live Drum & Bass - Breakbeats and Electronic Music for Real Drummers. This book was different because it was not about double bass drumming.
In 2019, Bloom published two more books. His third book with Hudson Music was Encyclopedia Rudimentia. This book has over 850 Drum rudiments. It includes drum exercises from different cultures and traditions. Later, he published a non-music book called The Forgotten Side of Bandelier. This book is about the history of the Tsankawi area at Bandelier National Monument.
In 2020, Ryan published two more books. One was an updated version of an 1812 Fife and Drum manual. The other was Thrash Metal Drumming. This book teaches about the beats and fills used in thrash metal music. Hudson Music published it.
Bloom published two books again in 2021. In April, he released an updated version of an 1817 drum manual. In June, he announced a book called Subdivide and Conquer. This book helps people learn to count and read rhythms.
In 2022, Bloom published an English translation of a Swiss military drum manual from World War I. This book was previously only available in French and German.
Bloom published two books in 2023. In February, he released an English translation of an 1885 rudimental manual. In March, Rudimental Grand Tour was released. This was his first book with the publisher Mel Bay.
In 2024, Bloom published three books. In January, he released an updated re-printing of The Moeller Book. In July, he published Italian Rudimental Drumming. This book describes the historic military drumming of the Kingdom of Italy. In November, he published an updated re-printing of Fred Poole's Side Drum Tutor.
Education
Ryan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. He received it from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2007.
