Ryan Broyles (born April 9, 1988) is a former American football player. He was a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). Ryan also played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners. He set a record for the most career receptions in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history. He was also named an All-American twice. The Detroit Lions picked him in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft. He later joined the Dallas Renegades of the XFL but retired before playing for them.

Early Life and High School Sports

Ryan Broyles was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He went to Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma. There, he was a talented athlete in three sports: football, basketball, and track.

Football Achievements

In high school football, Ryan played as a wide receiver and defensive back. He caught 79 passes for 1,688 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. On defense, he made 157 tackles and had 20 interceptions. He was recognized as an All-District and All-State player.

Other Sports

Ryan also played basketball, averaging 18 points per game. He was a top track & field athlete too. He tied for first place in the high jump at a 2006 meet, jumping 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10 inches). He also ran on the school's 4 × 100 m relay team.

College Football Career

Ryan Broyles played college football at the University of Oklahoma. He was part of coach Bob Stoops's Oklahoma Sooners football team from 2008 to 2011. He did not play in 2007, which is called being redshirted.

Freshman Year (2008)

In his first college game against Cincinnati in 2008, Ryan had seven receptions. He gained 141 yards, which was a new record for a freshman at the school. He ended his freshman season with 46 receptions, tying another school freshman record. His 687 receiving yards were also a Sooners freshman record. He scored six receiving touchdowns and returned 30 punt returns for 238 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore and Junior Years (2009-2010)

In 2009, Ryan caught 76 passes for 964 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had an amazing game in the Sun Bowl against Stanford University. He caught 13 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns, helping Oklahoma win 31–27. He was named the Sun Bowl MVP for his great play.

In 2010, he had an even better season. He caught 131 passes for 1,622 yards and 14 touchdowns. In the Fiesta Bowl victory over the University of Connecticut, he caught 13 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Year and Records (2011)

On October 15, 2011, Ryan Broyles made history. He broke the all-time record for career receptions in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). This happened during a game against Kansas when he made his 317th career catch. This record was later broken by Justin Hardy in 2014.

Ryan's college career ended on November 5, 2011. He suffered a serious knee injury during a game against Texas A&M. His senior season finished with 83 receptions for 1,157 yards and 10 touchdowns in just nine games.

He finished his college career with a total of 349 receptions, 4,586 receiving yards, and 45 touchdowns.

Professional Football Career

Detroit Lions (2012-2014)

The Detroit Lions chose Ryan Broyles in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft. He was the 54th player picked overall. He scored his first NFL touchdown in Week 7 of his rookie season. This happened in the fourth quarter of a game against the Chicago Bears. Ryan was named the 2012 Detroit Lions Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. On August 31, 2015, he asked to be released by the Lions, and they agreed.

Dallas Renegades (2019)

On October 16, 2019, Ryan was selected by the Dallas Renegades in the 2020 XFL Draft. The Renegades' head coach was Bob Stoops, who had also been Ryan's coach at Oklahoma. However, Ryan announced his retirement on December 5, 2019, before playing any games for the team.

Life After Football

Ryan Broyles is the son of Stephanie Moore and Anthony Broyles. He graduated from Norman High School and the University of Oklahoma.

After his time with the Lions, Ryan began working as a real estate developer. He focuses on projects in the Norman, Oklahoma area.

Ryan married his high school and college girlfriend, Mary Beth Offenburger, on July 7, 2012. Their son, Sebastian Reid Broyles, was born in June 2015. The family lives in Dallas, Texas, in a house that Ryan helped build.
