A Look at Råsunda Stadium's History

Råsunda Stadium officially opened in 1937. But there were even older stadiums on the same spot. The very first one opened way back in 1910. The first game at the 1937 stadium was on April 18, 1937. AIK played against Malmö FF and won 4–0. Axel Nilsson scored the first goal.

Stadium Capacity and Important Games

Råsunda Stadium could hold between 35,000 and 36,608 people. The older 1910 stadium hosted some football games. It also hosted some shooting events during the 1912 Summer Olympics. Råsunda was the home stadium for the AIK team. Many exciting local derby games between Stockholm clubs were played there.

The stadium was also the main office for the Swedish Football Association. About 75% of the national football team's home games were played at Råsunda. Other games were often played at Ullevi in Gothenburg. Both Råsunda and Ullevi were considered top-tier football stadiums.

Record Attendance and Special Events

The most people ever at Råsunda Stadium was 52,943. This happened on September 26, 1965. Sweden played against West Germany. West Germany won that match 2–1.

A famous concert also took place at Råsunda. On June 7, 1986, the British rock band Queen started their final tour there. It was called "The Magic Tour." Queen played for about 37,500 fans that night.

Hosting World Cup Finals

Råsunda was a very special stadium. It was one of only two stadiums to host both men's and women's World Cup finals. It hosted the men's final in the 1958 World Cup. Later, it hosted the women's final in the 1995 Women's World Cup. The other stadium with this honor is the Rose Bowl in the United States.
