History of Sacred Heart Church
Early Catholic Community in Teddington
Back in the late 1700s, there were factories that bleached linen near the River Thames. These factories are now where places like Teddington Studios and Teddington School are. A few Roman Catholic families lived and worked near these factories.
In 1882, a temporary Catholic chapel (a small place for worship) opened in Hampton Wick. Two years later, in 1884, a Catholic school was built in South Teddington. This building was called Chantry House. The ground floor was used for the school, and the first floor served as a chapel until the main church was built.
Building the Church
The Sacred Heart Church was designed by an architect named John Kelly. He used a classical style for the building, with bricks and stone decorations. The church first opened in 1893 and could seat up to 200 people.
It had five sections, including a main area called the nave, side areas called aisles, and a small rounded end section called an apsidal chancel. From 1934 to 1935, the church was made bigger. Two more sections were added to the west side, which also made space for a presbytery (a house for the priests).
The Parish of Teddington and Hampton Wick
A "parish" is like a local area that a church serves. The Sacred Heart Church serves the parish of Teddington and Hampton Wick. This area is bordered by the River Thames to the east and south. The western border goes through Home Park and Bushy Park. The northern border follows Teddington Park Road back to the river.
Schools and Community
A small group of nuns, called the Sisters of Charity of St. Paul, helped manage the school from about 1885. They also ran their own school, St Paul's Convent School, at 253 Kingston Road. In 1910, the sisters moved their convent school next to the church.
The parish's main school, Sacred Heart Primary School, moved to its current location in St Marks Road in 1963. In 2006, the old parish hall was sold. The money from this sale helped build new community rooms for the church, which opened in the same year.
