Sailor Moon R: The Movie is a 1993 Japanese animated superhero fantasy film. It was directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and written by Sukehiro Tomita. The movie is based on the popular Sailor Moon manga series by Naoko Takeuchi.
The film's name comes from the second part of the Sailor Moon anime, called Sailor Moon R. This movie was released around the same time. The story seems to happen near the end of the Sailor Moon R series. In the movie, Chibiusa already knows who the Sailor Guardians are. Also, Usagi and Mamoru are together again.
The movie's main story is about an alien named Fiore who comes to Earth. Fiore has a past with Mamoru and wants to see him again. But Fiore is controlled by a bad flower called the Xenian Flower. Usagi and her friends, the Sailor Guardians, must save Mamoru and Earth from danger.
Before the main movie, Japanese theaters showed a short 15-minute recap episode. It was called Make Up! Sailor Soldier. The movie first came out in Japan on December 5, 1993.

About Sailor Moon R: The Movie
The Short Film: Make Up! Sailor Guardians
In this short film, Usagi and Chibiusa hear two girls talking about the Sailor Guardians. The girls are looking at a poster. They discuss who is the smartest, most elegant, strongest, and the leader of the Sailor Guardians. Usagi proudly says she is all of those things. Chibiusa just shakes her head at Usagi's big claims.
The short film shows clips of each Sailor Guardian's first appearance. Their special songs play in the background. Even Tuxedo Mask is mentioned. As the girls are about to leave, Usagi asks them about Sailor Moon. The girls say many good things about Sailor Moon. But they also list her funny mistakes and weaknesses. After the girls leave, Usagi jokingly apologizes to the audience for being clumsy and crying a lot. Then she pretends to cry in a funny way.
The Main Story: The Promise of the Rose
When Mamoru Chiba was a young boy, he gave a rose to a mysterious boy. The boy then disappeared, promising to bring Mamoru a flower someday. In the present, Mamoru meets Usagi Tsukino and the other Sailor Guardians at the Jindai Botanical Garden. Usagi tries to kiss Mamoru. But he thinks the other girls are watching, so he walks away alone.
The mysterious boy, now grown up, appears from the garden's fountain. He takes Mamoru's hands. Usagi feels uncomfortable and tries to pull them apart. But the man pushes her away. He promises that no one will stop him from keeping his promise to Mamoru. Then he disappears again. Mamoru tells Usagi that the man's name is Fiore.
At Rei Hino's temple, the Sailor Guardians talk about an asteroid coming close to Earth. Luna and Artemis found plant life on it. The conversation turns into rumors about Mamoru and Fiore's relationship. Usagi remembers Mamoru telling her he had no family and was alone. She had promised to be his family from then on.
Fiore sends his flower-monster, Glycina, to Tokyo. Glycina tries to steal people's life energy. But the Sailor Guardians save everyone and destroy the monster. Fiore appears and says he was behind the attack. He uses a powerful flower called a Xenian. This flower makes him very strong, and he badly hurts the Sailor Guardians. Mamoru tries to talk Fiore out of fighting. But the Xenian is controlling Fiore's mind. Fiore attacks, and Mamoru jumps in front of Usagi to save her. Fiore then takes Mamoru to the asteroid that is heading towards Earth. He puts Mamoru in a crystal filled with liquid to heal him.
While in the crystal, Mamoru remembers meeting Fiore after his parents died in a car accident. Mamoru had thought Fiore was just an imaginary friend. Fiore explains that he had to leave Mamoru because Earth's air was not good for him. Mamoru had given Fiore a rose before he left. Fiore searched the galaxy to find a special flower for Mamoru. That's how he found the Xenian. Fiore wants revenge on humans because he felt lonely. So, he returns to Earth.
Meanwhile, Luna and Artemis tell the Sailor Guardians that the Xenian can destroy planets. It does this by controlling people who feel sad or lonely. Ami Mizuno realizes that the energy from the asteroid is the same as the flower-monster's evil energy. She figures out that Fiore is hiding on the asteroid. The Sailor Guardians decide they must rescue Mamoru. Usagi is unsure at first, but the other Sailors and Chibiusa convince her to save Mamoru and face Fiore.
The Sailor Guardians fly to the asteroid. Fiore tells them he plans to spread flower-seeds on Earth. These seeds will drain humanity's energy. The Sailor Guardians fight hundreds of flower-monsters. But they are eventually captured. Fiore tells Usagi to give up. Usagi cannot understand Fiore's loneliness. Fiore starts to drain her life-force. Mamoru escapes and saves Sailor Moon. He throws a rose at Fiore. The rose lands in Fiore's chest and blooms. This frees Fiore from the Xenian's control. The flowers on the asteroid disappear. But the asteroid still rushes towards Earth.
Usagi uses the Silver Crystal to become Princess Serenity. She tries to change the asteroid's path. Fiore tries to stop Usagi. He then realizes that when Usagi and Mamoru were children, Usagi was the one who gave Mamoru the rose. This was the same rose Mamoru later gave to Fiore. With Fiore and the Xenian destroyed by the Silver Crystal, Serenity, Endymion (Mamoru), and the Sailor Guardians combine their powers. They push the asteroid away from Earth. The Silver Crystal breaks, and Serenity dies from exhaustion. Back on Earth, Luna and Artemis worry about the Sailor Guardians. But Chibiusa assures them that the girls are fine.
Later, floating safely in space, the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask are very sad about Sailor Moon's death. Her transformation brooch is damaged. They say it was not worth surviving if they lost the person they cared about most. Fiore appears again and thanks Tuxedo Mask. He uses a flower filled with nectar, which has Fiore's life-energy. Tuxedo Mask puts the nectar on his lips and kisses Sailor Moon. This brings her back to life. Her transformation brooch is fixed, and the Silver Crystal gets its power back. Fiore becomes a child again and goes to a peaceful afterlife. Sailor Moon smiles weakly and says she told them she would protect everyone. The Sailor Guardians smile through their tears and hug her.
