Saint Vincent College is a private college in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It was started in 1846 by Boniface Wimmer. He was a monk from Bavaria. The college is run by the Benedictine Monks of Saint Vincent Archabbey. This Archabbey was the first Benedictine monastery in the United States. Boniface Wimmer also founded it.

History of Saint Vincent College
Saint Vincent College was first called Saint Vincent Archabbey and College. It was founded in 1846 by Boniface Wimmer. He was a monk from Metten Abbey in Bavaria. On April 18, 1870, the state of Pennsylvania officially made it a college. It was then named Saint Vincent College.
In 1963, a fire damaged many buildings on campus. This included a student chapel and a bell tower. In 1983, Saint Vincent College started allowing both male and female students. This is called being coeducational. In 2021, the college celebrated its 175th birthday.

What Can You Study at Saint Vincent?
Saint Vincent College has four main schools. Each school offers different subjects and programs. Students can earn bachelor's or master's degrees. Each school has a Dean who helps students and teachers. They also have a group of advisors from different jobs.
Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government
This school started in 2001. It has departments for Business, Criminology, Law and Society, and Politics. Students can study things like Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Marketing. They can also study Criminology or Politics. The school also offers master's degrees in Criminology and Management.
School of Social Sciences, Communication, and Education
This school was created in 2004. It includes subjects like Communication, Education, Psychology, and Sociology. The Fred M. Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media is also part of this school.
School of Humanities and Fine Arts
This school also started in 2004. It has departments for English, Fine Arts (Art and Music), History, Languages, Philosophy, and Theology. The Saint Vincent Gallery and the college's theater programs are here. There are also many student music groups. These include the Saint Vincent College Singers and the March of the Bearcats Marching Band.
The Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Computing
This school was formed in 2004. It includes departments for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, and Physics. Students can also study Biochemistry or Environmental Science. You can also get certified to teach subjects like biology or math.
The college offers special programs with other schools. This lets students get degrees in nursing or different types of engineering. For example, students can spend three years at Saint Vincent. Then they spend two years at an engineering college. After this, they get degrees from both schools.
In 2019, the college partnered with Carlow University. This allows students to get a nursing degree while staying at Saint Vincent's campus.
Sports at Saint Vincent College
Saint Vincent has many sports teams. They are called the Bearcats. They play sports like bowling, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and tennis. The college is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Most teams play in the NCAA Division III Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
The athletic colors are green and gold.
Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp
Since 1966, the Pittsburgh Steelers football team has held its training camp at the college. Before 1966, they trained in different places. In 1963, a fire damaged the campus. More buildings were added during rebuilding. These buildings helped provide more housing for players. Rooney Hall, built in 1995, is a dorm used by the Steelers. It is named after the team's founder, Arthur J. Rooney Sr..
A sportswriter named Peter King said he loves the training camp. He called it "the perfect training camp setting." He said it feels like Scotland on a foggy morning. He called it a "classic, wonderful slice of Americana."
Other Sports Highlights
The main sports center is the Robert S. Carey Student Center. It has a gym, swimming pool, and fitness center.
In 2011, the women's basketball team made history. They were the first team to qualify for the NCAA Division-III postseason. Their coach, Kristen Zawacki, sadly passed away in 2010. She had won over 500 games in her career. Her assistant, Jimmy Petruska, became the new coach. His teams have gone to the NCAA playoffs three times.
In 2016, the men's basketball team won their fourth straight conference championship. They advanced to the NCAA National Tournament.
In 2017, Brian Niemiec became the head coach for the men's tennis team. He was thought to be the youngest NCAA coach at 21 years old.
The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team has a top scorer. Maggie Nelson set NCAA Division III records in 2018. She scored 141 goals and 178 points. She was even featured in Sports Illustrated.
The Basilica
Saint Vincent Parish was started in 1790. It was the first Catholic church west of the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. A church was built and opened in 1835. It was named after St. Vincent de Paul.
The main stone for the basilica was laid in 1892. The building was officially opened on August 24, 1905. The basilica was fully repaired in 1996. This was part of the college's 150th anniversary celebration.

College Traditions
Every year, before Thanksgiving, the Saint Vincent community celebrates Founders Day. This day honors everyone who helped start the college. It includes a special ceremony and a candle-lit dinner. There are also fireworks and a campus light-up. The school's Concert Band plays Christmas music.
The Saint Vincent College fight song is "Forward, Saint Vincent." It was approved in 1996. The name comes from a quote by the founder, Boniface Wimmer. He said, "Forward, always forward, everywhere forward!" The marching band plays the fight song at games.
There are also tunnels under the campus. These tunnels are used for storage and maintenance. It is an unofficial tradition for students to explore these tunnels.
