Salmo Salar |
Salmo is a group of fish that includes many types of salmon and trout. These fish belong to the family called Salmonidae. You might know some of them, like the famous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta).
These fish are naturally found in Europe, parts of North Africa, and Western Asia, especially around the Black Sea area. The Atlantic salmon is the only Salmo species found naturally in Atlantic North America. Salmon and trout found in the Pacific Ocean belong to a different group called Oncorhynchus.
The name Salmo comes from the Latin word salmō, which means salmon. Scientists sometimes debate how many different types of Salmo species and subspecies there are. While Atlantic salmon and brown trout are found in many places, most other Salmo types live only in specific river systems or lakes.
