In 1999, he starred in the movie Captain Pantoja and the Special Services. The movie was based on a famous book by Mario Vargas Llosa and became a big hit. The same year, he also starred in the popular TV show Pobre Diabla. This show was so successful that it was shown in countries across America and Europe.

In 2014, he tried something new and directed his first movie, Magallanes. In 2024, he released his second film, Ramón and Ramón.
Political Career
Even while working as an actor, Salvador del Solar was interested in helping his country. This led him to a career in politics.
Minister of Culture (2016–2017)

On December 5, 2016, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski appointed Del Solar as the Minister of Culture. As minister, he worked to support Peruvian movies and improve the country's museums.
He helped create a new law to give more money to filmmakers in Peru. He also worked on projects to improve the Museum of the Nation and build a new national museum in Lurín.
In December 2017, Del Solar resigned from his position. He did this to protest President Kuczynski's decision to pardon former President Alberto Fujimori, who had been in prison.
Prime Minister of Peru (2019)
On March 11, 2019, President Martín Vizcarra chose Salvador del Solar to be the new Prime Minister of Peru. This is one of the most important jobs in the government, similar to being the president's top advisor.
When he became prime minister, Peru was in the middle of a political crisis. The President and the Peruvian Congress were in a major disagreement. Del Solar's main job was to help find a solution. He presented the government's plans to Congress, focusing on fighting corruption, strengthening the government, and helping the economy grow.
The Constitutional Crisis
The conflict between President Vizcarra and Congress grew worse. In September 2019, Congress tried to quickly choose new judges for the Constitutional Court, which is the country's highest court for legal matters.
Del Solar went to Congress to ask for a vote of confidence. This is a special vote where Congress shows if it still supports the government's plans. He wanted to change the rules for how the judges were chosen to make the process more fair.
However, Congress ignored him and continued to vote for the new judges. President Vizcarra saw this as a rejection of his government. On September 30, 2019, he used his constitutional power to dissolve Congress, which means he closed it down and called for new elections. Because the vote of confidence was denied, Del Solar resigned as Prime Minister on the same day.
Life After Politics
After leaving his role as Prime Minister, Salvador del Solar returned to his career in film. Many people in Peru liked his work as a politician, especially how he handled the crisis with Congress. Some thought he might run for president in the future.
However, in July 2020, he announced that he would not be a candidate for president. He said he believed in teamwork and institutional efforts, not just individual ones. He remains a respected figure in both the arts and public life in Peru.
