Early Life and Military Service

Samuel Cook was born on January 28, 1849. His birthplace was in what was then the British Province of Canada. This area is now known as Ontario, a province in modern-day Canada.

When he was about six years old, in 1855, Samuel moved with his family. They moved to Calumet County, Wisconsin, in the United States. He went to public schools in both Fond du Lac and Calumet Counties.

During the American Civil War, Samuel Cook joined the army. He was a private in Company A of the 2nd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry. He served under a famous general named George Armstrong Custer. Samuel continued to serve in the military until the war ended.

After the war, he lived on a farm in Calumet County until 1872. Then, he moved to Marathon County, Wisconsin. There, he started working in business. In 1881, he moved again, settling in Neenah, Wisconsin.

Political Career and Public Service

Samuel Cook became very active in public life. In 1889, the people of Neenah elected him as their mayor. He served in this important local leadership role.

He then moved into state politics. From 1891 to 1892, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. This is a part of Wisconsin's state government. In 1892, he was chosen as a delegate for the Republican National Convention. This big meeting was held in Minneapolis. At this convention, the Republican Party chose its candidate for president.

In 1895, Samuel Cook was elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress. He served as a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1895, to March 3, 1897. He chose not to run for re-election in 1896.

After his time in Congress, he tried to become a United States Senator. He ran for this position in 1897 and again in 1907, but he was not successful.

Later Life and Business
