History of San Gregorio

Before Europeans arrived, the Ohlone native people lived in this area. In 1769, the Spanish Portolà expedition explored the land. They camped near what is now San Gregorio for three days. A missionary named Juan Crespi wrote in his diary that the local people were very friendly and welcoming. He thought it would be a good place for a mission. However, no mission was ever built here. The Spanish missions that were built later followed a route further inland.

During the time when California was part of Mexico, this area was known as Rancho San Gregorio.

San Gregorio was named after Pope Gregory I, also known as Saint Gregory the Great. In the 1850s, San Gregorio was a busy town. Wealthy people from San Francisco would travel by stagecoach to the San Gregorio House. They came to enjoy fishing, hunting, swimming in the sea, and boat races. The old San Gregorio House building is still there today, but it's not a hotel anymore.

In the 1800s, a Chinese community lived along the creek in San Gregorio. Sadly, their buildings were washed away by heavy rains. The San Gregorio General Store has been open since 1889 and is still a popular spot. The original stagecoach stop is located across Highway 84 from the store. In 1915, there were seven cheese factories in San Gregorio. This community has also been used as a filming location for movies and TV shows.
