History of Santa Lucía Milpas Altas
Long ago, in the 1540s, a bishop named Francisco Marroquín decided how the church would be organized in the central valley of Guatemala. He divided the area between two important religious groups: the Order of Preachers (also known as Dominicans) and the Franciscans. The Dominicans were given control over the church areas, including one called Sumpango's curato.
Dominican Influence in 1638
By 1638, the Dominicans had many church areas, called "doctrines." They organized these into groups around six main convents (religious houses). Santa Lucía Milpas Altas was part of the group connected to the Guatemala convent.

Changes in Church Administration
In 1754, a historian named Domingo Juarros wrote about a big change. King Carlos III of Spain ordered that all church areas managed by religious orders (like the Dominicans) should be given to the secular clergy. This meant that regular priests, not monks or friars, would now be in charge.
