Santiago Arias: A Football Journey
Santiago Arias is a talented defender known for his speed and skill on the right side of the field. He has played for several top clubs in Europe and North America. He also proudly represents his home country, Colombia, in international matches.
Early Club Career
Starting at La Equidad
Santiago Arias began his football journey at the La Equidad academy in Colombia. He joined the senior team in 2009 and made his first professional appearance that same year. He quickly became a key player for the club, playing in 28 matches.
His great performances helped him get a chance to play for Colombia in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. After doing well for his club and country, he moved to Portugal to join Sporting CP.
Moving to Sporting CP
In 2011, scouts from Sporting CP noticed Arias while he was playing for Colombia's U20 team. On July 1, 2011, Sporting signed him to a five-year contract. He made his debut in Portugal in November, but he mostly played for the club's B-team. He scored one goal in 28 games for the B-team. Even though he played a few times for the main team, he didn't get a permanent spot.
Playing in the Netherlands: PSV
In 2013, Arias moved to the Dutch club PSV. He signed a four-year contract, and PSV paid Sporting €1.6 million for him and another player. Arias was given the number 13 jersey. He played his first league game on August 3, helping PSV win 3–2.
He scored his first goal for PSV in a 3–2 home win against FC Twente. Arias played in 25 league games during the 2013–14 Eredivisie season. PSV finished fourth, which earned them a spot in the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League.
European Competitions with PSV
Arias played in a European competition for the first time against SKN St. Pölten. PSV won that match. He also played in four group stage matches and the first game of the Round of 36 in the Europa League. An injury kept him out of the second game, and PSV was knocked out of the tournament.
Winning Titles with PSV
Even though they left the Europa League early, PSV won the 2014–15 Eredivisie title. This was Arias's first European trophy and PSV's first league title in eight years.
He scored a goal against Bayern München in a Champions League group stage match. On April 15, 2018, Arias helped PSV beat Ajax 3–0 to win the 2017-18 Eredivisie title. This was his fifth trophy in the Netherlands in just five seasons. Arias was named the Eredivisie Player of the Year for his excellent performance. He had 6 assists and 3 goals, and was chosen for the league's best team of the season.
Moving to Spain: Atlético Madrid
On July 31, 2018, Arias joined Atlético Madrid in Spain for about £11 million. He was given the number 4 jersey. He played his first unofficial game in a friendly match against Cagliari.
His first league game for Atlético was on September 1. On January 19, 2019, he scored his first goal for the team in a 3–0 win against SD Huesca.
Loan to Bayer Leverkusen
On September 24, 2020, Arias went on loan to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany for a season. However, he suffered a serious injury in October while playing for his country. He fractured his fibula and damaged ligaments in his left ankle. This injury cut his time at Leverkusen short, as he only played one game.
Loan to Granada
On August 30, 2021, Arias moved to Granada CF in Spain on a one-year loan. In December 2021, he had another injury, a hamstring problem, which needed surgery. He had the surgery in January 2022.
Playing in the USA: FC Cincinnati
On February 9, 2023, Arias joined Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati in the United States. He signed a one-year contract with an option to extend it.
International Career for Colombia

Arias was part of the Colombia U17 team that finished fourth in the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He played in six matches and scored the first penalty in a shootout against Turkey.
In 2011, Arias played in all nine matches for the Colombia U-20 team. They finished sixth in the 2011 South American Youth Championship. He also played in the 2011 Toulon Tournament, where Colombia won the final.
Senior National Team
In September 2013, Arias was called up to the senior Colombia team for the first time. He played in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay, which Colombia won 2–1.
Arias was chosen for Colombia's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He played in three group stage matches as a substitute. The next year, he was part of the team for the 2015 Copa America. He played twice, including the quarter-final match against Argentina, where Colombia lost on penalties.
