Santiago Arias Naranjo (born 13 January 1992) is a professional footballer from Colombia. He plays as a right-back for the club Bahia in Brazil. Santiago also plays for the Colombia national team.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at La Equidad

Santiago Arias began his football journey at the La Equidad academy. He joined the main team in 2009. His first professional game was against Deportes Tolima. Santiago quickly became a key player for the club in Bogotá. He played 28 games for them. His good performances helped him play for Colombia in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. After doing well for his club and country, he moved to Portugal.

Moving to Sporting CP

In 2011, scouts from Sporting CP noticed Arias during the U20 World Cup. On July 1, 2011, Sporting signed him to a five-year contract. He made his first team debut in Portugal on November 6. However, he spent most of his time playing for the B-Squad. He scored one goal in 28 games for the B-team. He played a few times for the main team but did not get a regular spot.

Success with PSV

In July 2013, Arias joined the Dutch club PSV. He signed a four-year contract. PSV paid Sporting €1.6 million for him and another player. Arias was given the number 13 shirt. He played his first league game on August 3, helping PSV win 3–2. He scored his first goal for PSV in a 3–2 home win against FC Twente. Arias played 25 league games in the 2013–14 Eredivisie season. PSV finished fourth, which earned them a spot in the Europa League.

Arias played in his first European competition match against SKN St. Pölten. PSV won that game 3-2. He played in four group stage matches. He also played in the first game of the Round of 36 against FC Zenit Saint Petersburg. An injury kept him out of the second game. PSV was knocked out of the tournament.

Even though they left the Europa League early, PSV won the 2014–15 Eredivisie title. This was Arias's first European championship. It was also PSV's first title in eight years.

In a Champions League game against Bayern München, Arias scored a goal with a header. This happened in a 1–2 loss.

On April 15, 2018, PSV beat Ajax 3–0 to win the 2017-18 Eredivisie title. This was Arias's fifth trophy in the Netherlands in five seasons. Arias was named the Eredivisie Player of the Year. He had 6 assists and 3 goals that season. He was also chosen for the league's best team.

Time at Atlético Madrid

On July 31, 2018, Arias moved to Atlético Madrid in Spain. The transfer fee was reported to be £11 million. He was given the number 4 shirt.

He played his first unofficial game against Cagliari. Atlético won that match 1–0. His first league game was on September 1. He came on as a substitute in a 2–0 loss against Celta de Vigo. On January 19, 2019, he scored his first goal for Atlético. It was in a 3–0 win against SD Huesca.

Loan to Bayer Leverkusen

On September 24, 2020, Arias joined Bayer Leverkusen in Germany on a loan. He had a serious injury in October while playing for his country. This injury cut his time at Leverkusen short. He fractured his fibula and damaged ankle ligaments. He only played one game for them.

Loan to Granada

On August 30, 2021, Arias went on a one-year loan to Granada CF in Spain. In December 2021, he hurt his hamstring. He needed surgery for it in January 2022.

Playing for FC Cincinnati

On February 9, 2023, Arias joined Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati in the United States. He signed a one-year contract. He helped FC Cincinnati win the Supporters' Shield in 2023.

Current Club: Bahia

Since 2024, Santiago Arias has been playing for Bahia in Brazil.

International Career

Youth Teams

Arias was part of the Colombia U17 team. They finished fourth in the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He played in six matches. He also scored the first penalty in a shootout against Turkey.

In 2011, Arias played all nine matches for the Colombia U-20 team. They finished sixth in the 2011 South American Youth Championship. He also played in the 2011 Toulon Tournament. Arias started all five matches and helped Colombia win the final.

Senior National Team

In September 2013, Arias was called up to the Colombia senior team. This was for 2014 World Cup qualifying matches. He made his debut against Paraguay. He played the whole game in a 2–1 away victory.

Arias was chosen for Colombia's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He played in three games during the group stage. The next year, he was in the squad for the 2015 Copa America. He played twice, including a quarter-final game against Argentina. Colombia lost that game on penalties.

He was also part of the Colombian team that finished third at the Copa América Centenario in 2016.

Arias was selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He started in all four of Colombia's matches. His team was knocked out in the Round of 16 by England. He continues to play for the national team, including in the 2024 Copa América.
