Sarah Anne Cooper (born December 19, 1977) is an American writer and comedian. She lives in New York City. Before becoming a full-time comedian, she worked in design for companies like Yahoo! and Google. She helped make Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides easy to use.

Sarah Cooper is known for her funny videos. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she became very popular. She made videos where she would lip-sync (move her lips to match someone else's words) to statements made by Donald Trump. These videos were a big hit. Because of their success, she appeared on many TV talk shows. In October 2020, her own show, Sarah Cooper: Everything's Fine, started on Netflix.

Early Life and Education

Sarah Cooper was born in Jamaica in 1977. Her family moved to Rockville, Maryland, in 1980. Her father was an electrical engineer. Her mother worked in human resources.

When she was a teenager, Cooper was interested in acting. She wanted to study theater. However, her parents wanted her to study something else first. So, she earned degrees in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. She also studied digital design at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Career Journey

Starting in Comedy

Sarah Cooper began doing stand-up comedy in Atlanta. At that time, she was working as a visual designer at Yahoo!. Later, she worked for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. She was a user experience designer, which means she made sure the software was easy for people to use. She kept writing and performing stand-up comedy during this time.

In 2014, she wrote a blog post called "10 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings." This post became very popular online, getting five million views. Later that year, she left Google to focus completely on writing and comedy.

Books and Writing

Her first book, 100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings, came out in 2016. It was a funny, fake self-help book. She also published a "coloring and activity book" called Draw What Success Looks Like that same month.

Her third book, How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men's Feelings, was published in 2018. This book also gave funny, fake advice. For example, it suggested women "Pepper your emails with exclamation marks and emojis.... Your lack of efficient communication will make you seem more approachable." Her books did not sell a lot of copies. By the end of 2019, Cooper was thinking about quitting comedy because it wasn't working out.

Becoming Famous with Videos

In spring 2020, Sarah Cooper started making videos on TikTok. In these videos, she would lip-sync to comments made by Donald Trump. Her first video that went viral was called "How to Medical." In it, she lip-synced to Trump talking about possible cures for the coronavirus. He had suggested shining light into the body or injecting disinfectant.

This video got over 24 million views on Twitter and TikTok. She made more similar videos that also became very popular. Cooper also shared her videos on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. By the end of 2020, one video had 16 million views across these platforms.

People thought Cooper's videos were very clever. They showed how simple political comedy could be. She used only an unedited voice clip of a politician speaking. This simple style was a new way for comedians to perform during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Television Appearances

After her TikTok videos became popular, Sarah Cooper was invited to many TV shows. She appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She even guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live!

In October 2020, her special show Sarah Cooper: Everything's Fine was released on Netflix. The show was produced by Maya Rudolph and directed by Natasha Lyonne. In it, Cooper played the host of a fake morning news program. The show had funny news segments, interviews, and commercials. It also featured sketches with famous people like Jon Hamm and Whoopi Goldberg. Cooper's character tried to stay positive while reporting on the big world events of 2020.

Reviews for her Netflix show were mostly good. Critics said it was funny and showed what living in 2020 felt like. One review called it "a funny and striking document." Another said it was "on balance impressive."

In 2020, Vogue and The New York Times named Cooper one of the "Breakout Stars." The Associated Press also called her one of five Breakthrough Entertainers of 2020. In 2022, she starred in the film Summering. In October 2023, she published her memoir called Foolish.

Personal Life

Sarah Cooper married Jeff Palm in February 2015. He was a software designer for Google. They divorced in 2021.
