Sarah Marquis (born June 20, 1972) is a Swiss adventurer and explorer famous for her long-distance solo walks across wild parts of the world.
One of her most incredible journeys was from 2010 to 2013. She walked about 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi) all by herself. Her path took her from the cold lands of Siberia, through the Gobi Desert, and into countries like China, Laos, and Thailand. She then traveled by boat to Australia and walked across it.
Because of her amazing achievements, she gave a TED talk in 2011. In 2014, National Geographic magazine named her one of its Adventurers of the Year.

Early Life and First Adventures
Sarah Marquis grew up in Montsevelier, a small village in northern Switzerland. Her father was a watchmaker and her mother was a housewife. From a young age, she loved to explore.
When she was 16, she got a job with a train company just so she could travel for free. At 17, she took a trip to Turkey and rode a horse across the Central Anatolia Region. This was just the beginning of her life of adventure.
A trip to New Zealand in her twenties was a turning point for Sarah. She spent a whole month in Kahurangi National Park with no food, learning to live off the land. This experience taught her how to connect with nature and survive in the wild.
Epic Journeys Around the World
Sarah's adventures have taken her to almost every continent. She has completed many challenging treks, often by herself.
Crossing Continents on Foot
Before her famous walk from Siberia, Sarah had already completed other huge journeys.
- In 2000, she walked across the United States from one border to the other in just four months.
- From 2002 to 2003, she spent 17 months walking 8,700 miles (14,000 km) across the Australian outback.
- In 2006, she hiked for eight months through the Andes mountains in South America, following a path from Chile to Machu Picchu. For this trip, she had some help. Her brother and a guide placed water supplies for her along the way.
The Siberia to Australia Trek
In 2010, Sarah began her longest and most famous journey. For three years, she walked alone from Siberia to Australia. She pulled a cart that weighed about 120 pounds (54 kg). The cart held all her supplies, including clothes, a tent, and food.
This journey was filled with challenges.
- Health Problems: In Mongolia, she had to stop her trip for a short time to get treatment for a serious tooth infection. But she returned to the exact spot where she left off and continued walking. She also got sick with dengue fever, a serious illness spread by mosquitoes.
- Staying Safe: To stay safe while traveling alone, Sarah sometimes disguised herself as a man. She was also very careful not to leave tracks so that no one could follow her. She faced many dangers, including encounters with criminals.
In May 2013, she finally finished her walk. She reached a special tree in the Nullarbor Plain of Australia, a place she had picked out on an earlier trip. In total, she had walked about 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi).
Recognition and Later Adventures
After her three-year walk, Sarah wrote a book about her experiences called Sauvage par Nature (which means "Wild by Nature"). Her incredible journey earned her an Adventurers of the Year award from National Geographic in 2014.
But she didn't stop exploring. In 2015, Sarah spent three months surviving in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. She walked 500 miles through this rugged wilderness, once again proving her amazing survival skills.
