Sarah Marquis was born on June 20, 1972. She is a famous adventurer and explorer from Switzerland.

Between 2010 and 2013, she walked about 20,000 kilometers (12,000 miles) all by herself. Her amazing journey took her from Siberia through the Gobi Desert, into China, Laos, and Thailand. From there, she traveled by boat to Australia and continued walking across the country.

In 2011, Sarah shared her experiences in a TED Talk. Later, in 2014, National Geographic magazine recognized her as one of their Adventurers of the Year.

Early Life and First Adventures

Sarah Marquis grew up in a small village called Montsevelier in Switzerland. Her father was a watchmaker, and her mother stayed home to care for their family. Sarah has two brothers.

She started exploring when she was very young. At 16, she got a job with a train company in Europe. This job allowed her to travel for free. When she was 17, she went to Turkey and rode a horse across the Central Anatolia Region.

Exploring the Wild World

Sarah says a trip to New Zealand in her twenties truly connected her with nature. She spent a month in Kahurangi National Park without any food. This experience taught her a lot about surviving in the wilderness.

After that, she went on many more adventures. She canoed through Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. She also camped in Patagonia and hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in the United States.

In 2000, Sarah walked across the United States from one border to the other. This journey took her four months. Later, in 2002 and 2003, she spent 17 months walking across Australia. She covered a huge distance of about 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers).

In 2006, she hiked through the Andes mountains in South America. She followed part of the Andes from Chile to Machu Picchu. This journey was about 7,000 kilometers (4,300 miles) long and lasted eight months.

The Great Solo Walk Across Continents

In 2010, Sarah Marquis began one of her most incredible journeys. She started a three-year solo walk from Siberia, through Asia, and then across Australia. She traveled mostly alone during this time.

She pulled a cart weighing about 120 pounds (54 kilograms). This cart carried all her clothes, equipment, and supplies. In 2011, she had to stop her journey in Mongolia because of a tooth infection. However, she returned to the exact spot and continued her walk.

For safety, she sometimes dressed like a man. She also tried not to leave tracks so that no one would follow her. Sarah finished her amazing journey in May 2013. She reached a special tree in the Nullarbor Plain in Australia, which she had seen on an earlier trip. In total, she walked about 20,000 kilometers (12,000 miles) on this three-year adventure.

Books and Awards

In 2014, Sarah Marquis wrote a book about her experiences. It is called Sauvage par Nature, which means "Wild by nature."

That same year, she received a special award. National Geographic named her one of their Adventurers of the Year for 2014.

In 2015, Sarah took on another challenge. She walked 500 miles (800 kilometers) across Kimberley in Western Australia. She spent three months surviving in the wilderness during this trip.
