Satartia is a small village located in Yazoo County, Mississippi. In 2020, only 41 people lived there, making it the smallest village in Mississippi.
It sits on the east bank of the Yazoo River. Long ago, Satartia was a busy river port. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Yazoo County that was not founded by Native Americans.

History of Satartia
The name "Satartia" comes from the Choctaw language. It means "pumpkin place." This name likely came from the small gourds that grew in the area.
In the early 1800s, Satartia was a very active shipping point. Steamboats carried cotton from here down the Yazoo River to New Orleans.
During the American Civil War, General Grant sailed a gunboat from Vicksburg. He captured the village of Satartia. The Wilson House on Plum Street was used as his headquarters during this time.
The war also saw the creation of the "Satartia Rifles." This was a well-known group of soldiers from the 12th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. They fought for the Confederate side.
In February 2020, a pipeline near Satartia broke. This pipeline carried liquid carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. First responders quickly helped the 42 residents of Satartia to safety. About 250 other people living nearby were also evacuated. In 2022, the company that owned the pipeline was asked to pay a large fine.

Satartia is a small village. According to the United States Census Bureau, its total area is about 0.2 square miles (0.52 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
