Club History: From Start to Now
How it All Began (1919–1945)
FC Bregenz was founded on June 28, 1919. Their team colors were black and white. This made them the fourth oldest football club in the Vorarlberg region. In their early days, the club mostly played friendly games. They played against teams from Germany and Switzerland near Lake Constance.
In 1927, FC Bregenz played in the Vorarlberger A-Klasse for the first time. This was the top league in Vorarlberg back then. They finished in second place. Just one year later, in 1928, FC Bregenz became the champions of Vorarlberg! They beat teams like FA Turnerbund Lustenau (now SC Austria Lustenau) and FC Lustenau 07.
In 1930, FC Bregenz finished fourth and was moved down from the A-Klasse. But by 1933, they were back in the top league. They stayed there until 1938. After 1938, the Vorarlberger A-Klasse was replaced by a new league. This new league included teams from Vorarlberg and Germany. The 1941–42 season was stopped because of World War II.
After the War (1945–1999)
After World War II ended, FC Bregenz started playing football again. But they had to change their name. In 1945, the club was renamed Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz. The club's new logo was also designed that year.
By 1946, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz was playing in the top league in Vorarlberg again. This league was called 1. Klasse Vorarlberg. In 1950, a new league called the Arlbergliga was created. It included teams from Vorarlberg and Tyrol.
After winning several championships, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz made history in 1954. They became the first club from Vorarlberg to be promoted to Austria's top league, the Staatsliga. However, they only stayed in the top league for one season before being moved down again. In 1960, the Regionalliga West was formed, and Bregenz played there for many years.
In 1966, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz reached the top Austrian league for a second time. They even finished in a good sixth place during the 1966–67 season. Two years later, they were moved down again. But they returned for the 1970–71 season under the name SC Olymp Bregenz. After one year, they were moved down once more.
The 1970s saw the club change its name and merge with other teams several times. In the 1973–74 season, after joining with FC Rätia Bludenz, the club was briefly called FC Vorarlberg. In the 1974–75 season, their official name became SC Vorwerk Vorarlberg (Bregenz) because of a new sponsor.
A big merger happened in 1979. Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz joined with FC Dornbirn 1913. They were known as IG Bregenz/Dornbirn until 1987. In 1996, the team, back to being Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz, was promoted to the second division. When Casinos Austria became their main sponsor, the club started playing as Casino SW Bregenz.
Top League, Europe, and Restart (1999–Present)
Between 1999 and the 2004–05 season, the club played in the Austrian Bundesliga, Austria's highest football league. They even played in European matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002 and 2004. One of their opponents was Torino from Italy. Bregenz lost to Torino after a 1–0 defeat away and a 1–1 draw at home.
After a successful period, the club started having serious money problems. The 2004–05 season was not good, and they were moved down to the second-tier Erste Liga. However, they were not allowed to play in that league the next season because of their financial issues. After losing an appeal, Bregenz had to declare bankruptcy and was officially closed down.
But the club did not stay gone for long! In 2005, a new senior team was formed. They started playing in the 5th level of Austrian football. In the 2009–10 season, they brought back the traditional black and white colors of the old SW Bregenz. On July 8, 2013, the club was officially renamed Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz again. They also started using the old club's logo.
In 2016, the club was moved down from the Austrian Regionalliga West. However, in the 2022–23 season, Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz won the Regionalliga West championship. This victory earned them promotion back to the Austrian 2. Liga for the 2023–24 season.
Home Stadium: ImmoAgentur Stadion
The ImmoAgentur Stadium is located in Bregenz. It was built in 1994 and replaced the older Bodensee Stadium. The stadium can hold 12,000 spectators, with about 4,000 seated.
The most people ever to attend a match there was 10,800. This happened during a local derby game against SC Austria Lustenau in the Austrian Bundesliga in the autumn of 1999.
Since the original SW Bregenz club went bankrupt in 2005, the new club (first SC Bregenz, then Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz since 2013–14) has played its home games at this stadium. The stadium is very close to the city center, near the train station and the Festspielhaus Bregenz. It is also very close to Lake Constance.
